Good news Bad news

Spent most of the day fitting and adjusting the hood and grill. I was excited to get it on there, but looks like it will have to be further adjusted to get the front of the hood to have an even gap to the top of the grill. I've got about a 3/8 inch gap at each side and about 1/4 inch in the center. Body adjustments can be a pain. Still nice to get it on there though . Still need to put on the headlight buckets, that should be easy... What am I sayin

Re: Good news Bad news

Would adjusting the little bumpers underneath the hood make any difference in the gap?

Nope, it's not a vertical gap, it's a horizontal gap.

It took two more pictures to show the gap? Now you're just showing off!
Nothing wrong with that, you did a great job!

Isn't it possible that the bumpers of the outer edges are keeping the corners high while the center is held down by the latch? It makes sense to me that lowering the bumpers would decrease the gap on the outside, if the they are in fact making contact with the hood.

Almost forgot... Awesome Jimmy!!

No doubt! Very Cool!!

That hood bumper thing is simple to check-just put a dab of something like grease or whatever on them and see if it smashes when you close the hood. You could even get a good idea of how hard it hits by how big the dab gets.

Beautiful truck. I'm having similar issues getting my grill, hood, and fenders to line up, after restoring an original grill from another truck. As you can see, my drivers side headlight isn't centered. I guess I'll just have to keep fiddling with it. Let me know if you find the secret trick

Re: Good news Bad news

If you don't have a GMC Service manual the '69 set at the download link page is for GMC and has a lot of sheetmetal adjustment specs. that may help to get it "there". Look around page 432 in the chassis service manual. Know how much "fun" it can be chasing even gaps but it is looking real good so far.

Did you try flipping the bezel? They aren't symmetrical.

Nice work Tom. The gaps were not that good from the factory.

Yes. On the drivers side I can't get the screw holes to line up, where the grille mounts to the side of the truck.

Re: Good news Bad news

That is one awesome jimmy!! I have had thought flashes one one over the past year, I may have to start looking a little harder. we must remember the great auto workers that put these "units"together were doing just that. They along with their bosses were hoping that the trucks would last about 4to 7 years before they were replaced with another new one. Also they were not as in love with them as we are and fit and finish was something that was not even in their vocabulary for the most part. I am sure there were exceptions to this statment as with any. Jim

Re: Good news Bad news

Maybe these shots will show it better. It's the same on both sides. The photo with the marker pen shows the gap is bout 1/2". It's just right in the middle where the 'M' in the GMC is (about 1/4"). The only thing we could think to do was to make a cut with a separating disk under the latch in the upper section of the grill, and pull/bend the center of the grill forward another 1/4", then move the hood forward about 1/8". That would help a little. How is everyone else's grill gap look? (Especially the original guys)
