85 C10 4 Link 9inch Z Frame Air T56 Build
Figured was about time I started a build thread before i'm finished. It's an 85 C10 I have had for a while. Was a long bed I shortened about 6 months ago. Been collecting parts for a couple years.
I will bring this up to current state quickly with alot of pictures. I work on it every day so progress has been very fast. Been 3 weeks since tear down and work started. Heree we go... Last edited by wraprail; 02-24-2013 at 09:26 AM. |

Re: 85 C10 4 Link 9inch Z Frame Air T56 Build
Fast forward to teardown complete. I don't have a frame table or jig so my garage floor will have to do. I welded stands onto my frame (at my projected ride hight) in 8 places, made the four front stands adjustable and painted around each one a mark on my garage floor so future measurments will be from same place. |

Re: 85 C10 4 Link 9inch Z Frame Air T56 Build
I made my frame cuts for my Z at a 20 degree angle. I figured that a 2 1/2 inch Z at 20 degrees will move the front wheels (and everything else) forward just a hair less than an inch. Also I figured it would be a stronger connection. I laid out my cuts and tacked a fence for my saw so I would have a perfectly straight cut that would need no grinding. My thinking was it would be alot easier to line up the two pieces and I was right. Piece of cake.

Re: 85 C10 4 Link 9inch Z Frame Air T56 Build
OK here you can see why I made the front frame "legs" or stands adjustable. They are 1 1/2 tubing with 1" pipe inside. The pipe is a very tight fit but will slide. There is a set scr
ew with 2 holes. One at ride hight and one 2 1/2 inches higher.. After cutting the frame I just removed the screw, lowered the legs and reinstalled the set screw. Now the front half is right where I needed it to weld. Wprked perfectly. |

I plated the inside of the frame on both sides then half ground my ugly ass welds on the outside.

Re: 85 C10 4 Link 9inch Z Frame Air T56 Build
On the front I did the same 20 degree angle cut only backwards this time. I could have just made a straight cut and removed the inch (or whatever I gained on the first cut) but I thought doing the same angle was best.. First reason was that I am not sure exactly how much wheelbase I added. I know it's less than an inch (I hope) but do not know exactly. Second reason I did not make a straight cut here was I wanted to keep the 2 bumper bolt holes intact. That way everything would line up and bolt back on. If I cut straaight and removed an inch the bumper bolt holes would go away. I cut just past the steering box mounting holes and the same place on other side.

Thanks...
So as you can see I used 2 inch X 1/4 flat bar to tie the frontr frame horns together and tied that into the factory front crossmember. |

Re: 85 C10 4 Link 9inch Z Frame Air T56 Build
Had to cut the crossmember so I figured it was a good place for a driveshaft loop.
