New Here....In Louisiana

Hello everyone. Just wanted to post and introduce myself. Name is Joe and I live in south Louisiana. Have always been a fan of the 60-66 Chevy Trucks. I used to own a 1966 short bed fleetside when I was about 17 and still kick myself for trading it.

Now at 34 I am on the prowl for another 60-66 style truck. When I was little my great grandfather had a step side. I dont know the year and only have one good pic of it. Maybe someone here can tell from the badge on the side what year it is. I think maybe a 1963 but I dont know how to tell the different years by looking at them just yet.

Is there a link here that shows the differences in the years?

Anyways, I have been reading all the great threads here for about a week now and signed up a couple days ago. Look forward to many more good reads in the future and one day possibly posting my project when I find the right one.

I do come bearing a gift though......a picture of my g-grandfather with his truck.

I logged a many hour playing in the back of that old truck while it was parked in the barn. Some very fond memories of playing in it and him driving me to town to go to the barber shop. It was about a 40 min ride one way. It was good times.

Re: New Here....In Louisiana

and Welcome aboard, this is a great place, lots of good people and a wealth of info. Your grandfather's truck looks to be a 63 due to the wraparound windshield... I'm going to look at a 63 this weekend and the fender badge is in the same location... PM Sent...

Re: New Here....In Louisiana

Thanks. It has always been a personal fav pic of mine. Next time I go back to my hometown I plan to talk to his son and see if by some chance that truck is still around and in fixable shape. Would love to somehow get his old truck. That is a long shot though.

I am more partial to the shortbed fleetside have been growing more and more into the stepsides looking at all the great pics here.

I will check out the for sale section here. I am still learning where everything is on here.

Re: New Here....In Louisiana

Cool. Take pics for us. The chase is half the fun. Be picky. Find the most rust free project that you can afford. It will put you way ahead in the long run. Bolt on sheet metal is not so bad, its the extensive cab repairs that can be time consuming and costly. Mechanical issues aren't bad if you have the knowledge or tools. But getting a solid cab and as complete a truck as yu can will pay off big time. Lots of guys buy a $1000-$2000 truck to put alot of hours and metal in to still have a $2000 truck. Get something solid that you can work on and drive and you'll enjoy it more. Just my 2cents worth.

Thanks.

What are some of the areas that may not be so obvious where rust tends to happen on these old trucks?

Re: New Here....In Louisiana

Cab corners, rocker panels (inner/outer), cab supports, over the windshields, floor pans, door pillars, lower doors, edges around the hoods, rear part of front fenders are the more common areas to check. Fenders are easy to get and bolt on. Id be more concerned with rust on the cab. Hoods can be found as can most of the mechanical and non-mechanical parts. Make sure the frame is straight. Many people do not do a solid check when buying projects. Its love at 1st sight, which is ok, but can get costly. Dont be afraid to take a magnet. Its your hard earned money, so do a good check and ask questions.

Thanks. I know as far as the mechanical part of it...not too worried about what is under the hood or if it runs. I have a 350 that I will prob. end up using eventually.

I do want the cab to be as good as possible though. I am not a body repair man and have little to no skill in that area. Lots of good threads here to learn with though I see.

welcome to the forum joe! im down in south louisiana too so ill make sure i keep an eye out for ya on the trucks. to me that one looks like it could be anything from a 60 to a 63. if you want that same look definately go with a 63. the suspension is alot easier to deal with. good lock boss man!

Re: New Here....In Louisiana

Welcome! I agree with what 1963c-10 said on where to look. And if you have to buy any sheetmetal, buy original and fix that if needed. I didnt like the fit of my repro stuff. i had to modify it to fit. I ended up buying a floorpan for AZ to fix my stuff. Its easier. But good cabs are going fast. This seems to be a growing style of truck that people are into. there are alot of new members on here lately. Lots of info and good pics!

No doubt. It may not even be worth getting as it would surely have spent its entire life as a farm truck with little care. It's worth checking on to me though.

I think that is the only one of him and his truck. I will check some of the albums though.

Thanks for the welcome. Good to see another Louisiana guy on here. I am in the Slidell/Pearl River area and work in Hammond so not all that far.

Well today I went through all of their old picture albums and the only other pic i could find of his truck was the back end in the stall he kept it in. You have to look hard to find it though. That is me and my mom when I was younger.

Also found this pic. I dont think its his truck but that is his brothers house so it may have been his brothers or something. Not sure. Included it here though since it does fit the style.
