Under Dash Speaker mounting?

My old '64 never had tunes and it's time to install an under dash speaker.

I bought what was supposed to be a "direct replacement" stereo speaker from Brothers. No installation instructions, or diagrams of any kind were included.

Looking under my dash, which for an old fat man with a bad back is no simple task, I see the grill where the speaker would mount along with 2 unused vent holes.

The speaker I purchased has 2 Z shaped brackets attached to it as if they were to be secured someplace, but the roadmap to that someplace wasn't included.

Here is what I have..... all I need to know from someone that may of been in the same boat as I, is some direction....where or how is this to be mounted?

I looked around in there and didn't find anything that would help me mount the speaker without having a radio installed to help anchor it.

I think i'll rig up a pliable rubber gasket and glue it up in place.

This is what the original bracketry looks like from the side with my dash mounted speaker in my 1965 GMC Truck cab. There is a built in bracket coming from the firewall side and then the bracket on the bottom of the speaker screws to that bracket. On the other end it looks like some sort of rubber stopper on one side that sits on top of the ashtray compartment in the dash. Hope this helps!

This replacement setup is a bit different that the original speaker.

I'll make a mount out of something and glue it in with panel adhesive, then screw the plastic base to that.

The "rocket scientist" who used to own my truck came up with his own solution to this problem. He elongated the slots in the dash metal, drilled a couple of holes and put a speaker grille on the top of the dash. The long screws holding the speaker grill also support the speaker. It looks awful. I'm going to have to get creative on the slots and open holes when I pull the windshield and reseal it.

His way was effective, though. Just not my style.

I have the exact same set up under my dash now, installed by the PO so I don't know the "how". I just ordered some replacement 3 1/2's and will be pulling it out to swap the speakers, I'll take some pics when I do for sure but I may be able to get some this evening. Right now I don't have defroster hoses and the aftermarket radio is smaller than factory so I may can get a camera up in there and see some detail.

NOW I understand just how is the heck I'm supposed to use the bracket. I understand the where the rubber bumper goes against the top of the ash tryew, BUT are there two or more screws the hold the front in.

Talk about a picture worth a thousands words!!!

Dropped mine out for a look, there's a stud that fits in a hole that mine mounts to, and the rubber wedge side is over the ashtray. It looks factory, and I don't see how anyone could have drilled the hole that the stud fits in without a super short angle head drill. The slotted strap supports the rear of the radio.

Just a FYI....the speaker mounts are different for the '60-'63's as compared to the '64-'66's.

Go figure? Now that I know what it mounts like, this at least gives me some hope that I can get SOMETHING that's makes a sound in the space

I just bought a complete instrument panel (IP) removed from a 1964 Chevrolet C50/60/80 series truck. It is a very original unmolested piece and it has the original radio and speaker still in it. Here are pictures showing how it all mounts. The pictures are taken with the dash in normal position. Being all together but out of the truck makes it a lot easier to see how it all fits together.

The rear edge of the speaker has a tab riveted to it that slips into a rubber “wedge”. That wedge fits snuggly into the top rear corner of IP metal above the ash tray. Here is a picture of the wedge by itself fitted up into the dash. It has the part number molded in- 3838128.

The forward edge of the speaker has another tab riveted to it where a metal bracket attaches. That bracket is attached to the top forward edge of the dash panel by a shaped rod that hooks into a hole. There is an existing hole in the dash panel and the hook extends through it, but is covered on the top by the windshield weatherstrip. The rod attaches to the speaker with a wing nut.

The forward speaker bracket also attaches to a bracket that goes to the rear of the radio. This supports the rear of the radio, with the two nuts under the control knobs supporting the front.

anyways, week turnaround and $50 did it for me..

just need time to swap the 10ohm 6x9 out of the dash for the proper plate..

I too had the same problems mounting the speaker. I wasted the $75 bucks on the aftermarket B/S speaker in the top photo (ought to be a crime to sell that as a replacment). I bought a dual voice coil speaker from R & B Radio - company that restored my OEM AM to FM/IPod.

I had the factory under dash mount, but the new speakers do not use the same square magnet that the older speakers used. So you need to mount a soft piece of wood (no speaker/radio interference) to securely hold the new speaker to the bracket, I use a piece of 1/8th. thick bass.

I carefully marked the dash and had to use a small screwdriver to lift the rubber windshield gasket up to get the set screws in to hold the bracket.

That way would work with us that have the air conditioning ducts instead of the ashtray...
