Re: title question help please
I had this to happen to in 2000 when I got my 67 camaro it was from new york and new york does not print tiles for vehicles before 1972 I live in VA and VA is one of the most hardcore about having everything perfect at the dmv but I got online and it is ilegal for states the issue titles to refuse to issue a title for a vehicle legally purchased from a state that does not issue titles , I walked in the dmv with a registration from new york they instantly said WE CAN'T GIVE YOU A TITLE SORRY ! So I insisted that they had to and told them I was not leaving to call richmond or whatever butthat I had purrchased this car from a state that did not issue titles on vehicles before 1972 and I am a va resident and I wanted title and tags TODAY ! I Left with a VA. Title in my name .

Re: title question help please
Yeah, reason I know so much is I have a 67 Firebird my dad and I had worked on when I was like 7 or 8. My dad never got the registration for it (NY uses registration for 1973 and older, no title) for the car... it was the mid 80's... my dad had the registration to like 10 other cars... wink wink... but when I got the car, it had all the correct tags, everything matched, original paint under interior matched... so I wanted the correct title. Puttered around with different options in SC off and on for months. It just wasn't going to happen. I even called a couple title services that charge a grand + and they both said because of SC, they may have trouble getting me a title for it.
I knew the car wasn't stolen (my dad knew the guy he bought it from, he says he lost the registration) and I ran the VIN on it. Fast forward to August. I went to NY to visit my family (wedding) and brought a picture and tracing of the VIN. My dad remembered the name and address of the last owner from like 1984. We took that info to the DMV, we were there all of 15 minutes and I walked out with a legal NY registration. The car was somehow in the computer system, even though it was last registered in NY in the early 80's! I still don't get that... Moral of the story? Don't buy a car in SC without a title unless you have a definite way around it.

Re: title question help please
IMO, back when these trucks were new, when people bought them they used them on the farm etc.. literally keeping them till either the truck rusted to the ground or the owner passed away. What 20+ yrs? People move, houses burn, just life in general happens sometimes. Titles get lost and/or destroyed. .. regardless of where the original title was issued .. 20 yrs ago.
It's a pain to go through it. I'm not saying it's an easy process but it can be done.

Re: title question help please
In Georgia, it's not 25 years- it's that Georgia didn't title vehicles until 1985. It's also true about Alabama being 1975- nothing before that was titled. Here in Tennessee, everything is titled, no matter how old.
I've bought lots of old cars from Georgia, mostly without a hitch. In some cases though, for whatever reason, there was quite a bit more money spent and jumping through hoops of finding previous owners, etc. Like I said, mostly no problem, but I think it depends on who you get at the DMV. Your mileage may vary!

Re: title question help please
Here is the aforementioned section for Texas;
10.3 Bill of Sale Effective May 1, 2001, bills of sale are acceptable in the following situations: 1. with out of state or out of country registration receipts that do not provide transfer of ownership sections, provided the issuing state does not issue certificates of title as the negotiable evidence of ownership for that year model vehicle, or the issuing country only issues registration receipts, and the out of state or out of country receipt reflects registration that is current or that has been expired for six months or less; 2. with out of state titles on which all dealer reassignment sections have been completed, provided the issuing state does not utilize supplemental dealer reassignment forms; 3. with operation of law transfers; 4. with component parts utilized to rebuild, reconstruct or assemble motor vehicles; and 5. with non-titled Texas vehicles. When a Texas resident has purchased a vehicle with an out of state title that indicates an assignment to someone other than the Texas purchaser or a licensed motor vehicle dealer, the options for the “first Texas owner” to obtain a title are to pursue a Tax Collector’s Hearing, a Bonded Title, or a court order. Additionally, the same options apply when a Texas titled vehicle is sold to an out of country dealer or resident and then resold to a Texas resident on the existing Texas title.
