Turn Signal Switch Question
My 66 has what appears to be the original turn signal switch. I had some issues with the switch canceling but after I took it apart I noticed the previous owner had the hub on in the wrong position so it wasn't tripping the cam. Signals worked fine and then the right signal would only come on every once in a while but left was fine. Now both won't come on but if you hold the turn signal arm up or down with some force, they will work. I mean you really have to put some pressure on the arm. Almost feels like it will break off. I hate to replace the switch. Can I maybe take everything out and clean it? Or does these usually just go out with age? Thanks guys.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
IIRC, I fiddled with the contacts in one (or more?) of mine by bending them to fix that, and maybe also trimmed the turn signal cam to get more travel? That was an aftermarket replacement cam though, so you might just have dirty/corroded contacts or something. Just take it apart and find out...

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
Shouldn't take that much force to trip the cam. Just a light bump will take care of it. I'd remove the wheel and shaft hub and see how it looks inside. I just got done doing the one in the fleetside column myself and have another to do next week on the stepside. The biggest issue I see is the plastic parts get brittle over the years and with the couple of columns I've dealt with lately, they all had the same issues which were the signal switches with the small inner ears broken off and cancel cams. I also like to relube the upper bearing while I have the switch out. They are not that hard, just pay attention to disassembly, take a few pics and reinstall the same. I have been ordering my parts from Classic industries with no issue on istall of fitment of parts.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
You can remove the horseshoe by taking out the screw in back of it. Then very carefully bend the spring contacts to increase the pressure.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
Ill try that. I really would rather keep my stock original unit rather than a new import piece.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
You don't have to but import! You can get the AMERICAN MADE product, made on the original tooling, from the people that make them for AC Delco! Every one you see that says it's an AC Delco is made by the same people, and this guy sells them at the best price.
I have one in my truck, and it has worked flawlessly since I installed it. Delco Part #D-6202 Available here: http://www.corvettecolumns.com/switches.html Last edited by Todd W. White; 06-11-2014 at 05:31 PM. |

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
Thank you. Ended up doing just that. My buddy had a new switch so I just looked at how his springs were bent and copied them. Works like new now! Much appreciated.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
thanks jtrichard. The owner who sold me the truck actually supplied this part but it does look like the original one in the steering colum. Will it still work?

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
There is allot more stuff that goes inside the column. That part mounts at the base of the column and there is a cable that goes in between the two. I have not seen a replacement cable for sail.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
The one you have pictured is for a 60-62 it should work on a 61 don't know where you can get the plug in pig tail though is the old one shot? You might be able to have on made up by one of the places that make wiring harnesses just give them your old one for color code...Vernski

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
By head lights do you mean head lights or the turn signal/parking lamps on the hood?
Reason I ask is unless I am wrong the head lights should have nothing to do with the turn signal switch but I may be mistaken.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question
Yeah the headlights themselves just randomly turn off but I've got all other lights it might be just coincidence but when I wiggle the turn signal they come back on. I did solve my brake lights today the brake pedal switch was bad. But now I dont have a right turn signal lol it's always something I guess
