Gas Tank Relocate HELP PLEASE!!!

I have been searching the forum and looking for hours!! I have a bagged 62 I have just pulled my leaking behind the seat tank. I am looking at moving the tank to the rear but everything I am seeing hangs down below the frame pretty far. What are you guys using?? Pics please. Thinking of maybe just using a fuel cell under raised bed floor??

I thought that despite hanging below the frame many of the frame mount tanks are still high enough not to drag.

I think some have had good results with a 69 or 70 mustang tank.

Consider this. Measurements.

On my 65, the lower sidewall of the spare tire is 13" down from the bed cross sill. The bolts/bracket add another few inches.

A 21 gallon side fill tank (LMC Trucks) is typically 13" from bottom to top.

So, if you cut out the spare tire cross bar and tuck it up in between the frame rails (whether or not you cut out a notch in the associated bed sill) such a tank should hang no lower than your existing spare tire/bracket assembly.

If your spare ain't dragging, your tank shouldn't either. But if you are one of the folks that are crazy low, all bets are off and you might need a skid plate anyway.

Naturally, the smaller capacity bed fill tanks will tuck up in between the frame rails even neater.

I think most folks simply object to the potential for dragging as the visual from the rear (especially with no bumber) is a bit scary.

I'll let ya know how a 21 gallon goes in. I'll be putting one in place on my truck in the next few weeks. I am tired of fumes in the cab too and it'll be nice to have the safety margin and the extra space behind the seat.

I used a 69 Camaro tank with the Camaro big block fuel sending unit and the Camaro spring loaded tag bracket in my 61 short bed fleet side. Nothing visabile from the back and the filler is centered behind the tag so it doesn't matter which side of the pump you pull up to. I saw the idea on this forum and it had pictures. I cannot figure how to post pictures of mine.

I'd like to see your install. I'm on the verge of taking my LMC sourced tank and relocating the filler to come out the back using a neck from a '61-'63 full size Chevy. I've seen a couple '69 Camaro tank installs on here but I wasn't happy with the look.

I'm running a 22 gallon 70s chevy van gas tank. I didn't like how low the blazer tanks hung and ran across this after doing a little research. Fits pretty good into the 60-62 frame rails and doesn't hang too low even with my rear bags aired out. Check out gastanks.com p/n GM-8A or the salvage yards..hope this helps

Yes, I used the van's sending unit with a set of aftermarket "Dolphin" gauges.

Some pictures of my 69 Camaro tank on my work truck. Probably not what someone would want on a show truck but it was easy and inexpensive. Plenty of clearance but my truck is only lowered 2 inches.

THERE!!!! That's the install I've been looking for, with a filler hole that don't mess with the bed! How tough was the fitting on that jewel, and what sending unit worked with it....??? Heck, Classicparts has a steel Camaro tank for $85...

While not a lower cost option, the folks at Performance On Line have a tank specific for the 60-62 trucks. I was going to go the lower cost option but wanted to make sure I got something that was really safe....
