Arkansas K10

No special reason for the title , but we have to have one.

I picked this K10 up in California a while back.

It's an original Cheyenne with deluxe paint, but somebody had pulled all the trim and painted it all one color.

It is as rust free a truck as I have seen in a long time. It still has the original rockers in place.

When I bought it I planned to replace the carpet, seat, headliner and exterior moldings and drive it.

I started painting the white and touching up the Ochre and realized the color on the truck was not ochre. The trim was already off the truck, so I might as well paint it.

The original paint on the truck was very thin, or non existent. All the black painted parts under the hood and frame had surface rust.

So here we go with a frame off. I built a fixture for A body Chevelles years ago, and I adapted it to support the bed while I work on it. Once I get the gas filler holes filled, I will stand the bed up and blast it inside and on the bottom.

When I get the bed worked, and in epoxy, I will pull the cab and put it on a rotisserie and strip and paint it.

Notice there is almost no paint on the front of the bed.

I missed seeing this build hit the forum, but I'll be watching. What a solid foundation to start with!

Re: Arkansas K10

I finally got around to painting the bottom of the bed floor today. I had planned to sand blast it but all I had to do was power wash it and scuff it with a pad.

Re: Arkansas K10

I'm struggling with what to do inside the bed. It had a bed liner in it, hence the nice bed, but I hate bed liners. Stuff slides around in them like it was on ice.

I thought about a color matched spray in bed liner, but they always make me think somebody is trying to cover something up.

Re: Arkansas K10

im going to use color match linex on my IH build for that very reason...to cover stuff up...my bed floor was well used and I straightened what I could and i also shortened the bed.....my thinking was the linex would help hide some of it

Rubber bed mats are what I use. Plastic bedliners usually grind the pait off the floor--gack.

Re: Arkansas K10

The floor is real nice because of the bed liner, but the bed liner did take the paint off in places. I may do a mat. The truck will see the easiest times of it's life as long as I have it. Read, till I'm gone.

I have a rough late model for working.

Re: Arkansas K10

I got the inside of the bed blasted today. Of course I waited until we had 95% humidity to tackle this. I wore a hoody, gloves and face mask. It was hot in there.

Re: Arkansas K10

I got some other projects finished up and got back on the K10 this week. We set the cab off today and I degreased the frame and chassis.

The only assembly mark I found so far is a mark on the rear differential cover.

Only the two marks at the far outside of the cowl that look like a ribbon.

Re: Arkansas K10

I got the power washer out this afternoon. It's tempting to get more aggressive in the cleanup, but since this is a restoration, I'm trying to document all the factory markings and colors I can.

The front springs were gray.
The transmission has "H4" stenciled on the side.
The bell housing has a "P" or "B" in crayon.
The passenger side axle tube has blue paint inspection marks by the shock mount.
The transfer case has the data tag on it.

Re: Arkansas K10

The yoke behind the transfer case is red like the transfer. The bolts appear to have been in the transfer case when it was painted, because they are red also.

The calipers have inspection marks on them in crayon.

Re: Arkansas K10

I found some more assembly plant inspection marks today.

Blue paint mark on top of axle tube by rear shock mount.
Blue paint mark on top of transfer case at the rear output shaft.
Part number stencil on drive shaft. "Chassis and Body Parts Catalogue" effective May, 1979 says the part number is 3995752
