Re: Bed Wood

Other than appearance, are there any advantages to one kind of wood over another? I have a little HF sawmill and access to red oak, white oak, gum and pine. I even have an Ash blow down that's only about 50 yards from my mill. I know it'll be time consuming and I'll probably regret it before I get finished but I plan on trying to make my own bed wood when I get around to my '59. So far I've only cut up red oak for trim for my house but I have enough experience with it to know that you throw away a lot more than you keep out of a log.

Re: Bed Wood

My friends help was indispensable to get my bed disassembled and reassembled with my new wood. Ron here milled and finished all the oak boards I purchased at a local lumber seller. I picked it quarter-sawn for better stability.

Re: Bed Wood

White oak . To bad it's most likely going to get washed with the saddle paint like the original. Doing it myself only thing I didnt do was mill it. What I started with and after a few passes in the planer

Re: Bed Wood

Well I thought I had my Bed Wood ordered thru a member on here but I cant get him to respond to my PMs here . Dont know if there was a glitch when paying thru Credit Card or maybe the order went thru and is fine , I thought he would let me know one way or the other . My truck will be home soon and I really need that wood . I hope maybe he will see this and let me know what I need to do if anything .

Re: Bed Wood

I started cutting my boards today . I bought Beetle Kill Blue Stain Pine last fall and finally cut the outer two of the eight boards needed for my step side. Six more to go ,I hope it doesn't take another 6 months to get them cut.

I made the bed for the 70 Longhorn 4x4 using slabs from cut up power poles. Easy to work with and should be durable. Finish is a couple of coats of Danish Oil Finish. I think most of the older power poles are Cedar but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Re: Bed Wood

I was going to keep this a secret, but I'm planning to try this..

friend at work uses it on outdoor furniture with great results..

I'm still researching for suitability for a working truck bed floor..

Re: Bed Wood

We used 12 or 13 coats of this on my new wood bed a few years ago - nice stuff. I keep my truck garaged though.

Re: Bed Wood

Wow, love the quarter sawn oak, and the finish is great!!
How old is the finish? I used a spar urethane, and already seeing a few cracks from sun damage on the clear. Truck is garaged most of the time too, so definitely interested in finding a more durable finish
Thanks,
Jim

It is about 3 years old. No issues at all with the finish. I purchased this product to avoid yellowing, since it is used on Kayaks and such. I did have two of the boards with a more straight grain crack slightly, but it did not affect the finish that I could see. The cut of the wood should help avoid any shift or warp. We are replacing the two boards in question when my buddy gets his wood shop set up again.

Re: Bed Wood

Three years is about the same age as mine, looks like the UV filter did it's job!
That's a key for anyone doing their own bed, is getting a durable finish on the wood, thanks for the tip!

Re: Bed Wood

I stained the white oak in my bed and then put four coats of automotive clear on it on all four sides. It's only been a year so far but there are no signs of any problems. Actuall wood urethane would be quite a bit cheaper though and probably would be fine.

Re: Bed Wood

if it will see any weather I usually stain the wood and then finish using a generous amount of Teak Oil because if it ever starts to look dull I can just add more oil without having to completely refinish the wood.

Chip Foose video on the C-28 using Teak Oil. approx 10 mins in...

I remember seeing that video . Thanks for bringing that up , because all my search's missed it . Teak was another suggestion on my mind.

Re: Bed Wood

I picked up the wood for my bed today. 2.50 a board ft for kiln dried white oak. The mill had a big order about two years ago and they ordered more than they needed . Took their wood and left the rest. It's still rough sawn 4/4 . I bought an extra 100 board ft to make a table for the misses.

Re: Bed Wood

Thought I would update you guys with the product I chose to use on my Bed Wood .It is made by WATCO ,Exterior Wood Finish , It says it is an oil product that soaks into the wood and then hardens . I will coat top , bottom , and ends and let it dry good . It can be applied again if ever needed . I plan to get that done soon . It is a natural finish which is the look Im after . The truck is going to have original patina paint polished and waxed but NOT clear coated so I did not want a shiny bed .
