Turbo build in my 65

Slow days at work thought I’d post few pics of the latest project on my c10. Was recently on a holiday in mexico then had to quarantine for 2 weeks so got some quality shop time in at home .
Made my own hot side manifold used 2.5” stainless and 1.5” . Was a lot of fitting and welding but was nice to locate the turbo right where I wanted it and retain battery in stock location
I tried to stay with a 4” down pipe but couldn’t get it to fit down by frame and beside my cross over pipe so reduced it to 3”
- Used 2.250” for my cross over
- Went with a vs racing next gen 78/75 turbo
- 44 mm eBay waistegate and 50mm bov. These are supposed to be decent quality knock offs https://www.ebay.com/itm/44MM-TURBO-...72.m2749.l2649 https://www.ebay.com/itm/50MM-ALUMIN...72.m2749.l2649 https://www.ebay.com/itm/CX-Racing-3...72.m2749.l2649
- I originally bought a bigger intercooler but didn’t want to hack my rad support up totally so I got a smaller width intercooler and didn’t have to notch the rad support as much this one is 26”x12”x3” I believe
- used a stock truck manifold on drivers side with v bands
- got everything ceramic coated
Pretty much have it all finished up except bigger injectors, oil catch can and a boost/wideband gauge.

Re: Turbo build in my 65

Intercooler isn’t as big as I would of liked but this one fit alot better with minimal hacking to rad support

Re: Turbo build in my 65

Excellent job. Turbo placement looks optimal. Did you mig weld your pipe together? You have a link to the wastegate and blow off valve?

Re: Turbo build in my 65

Thx. The waistegate isn’t in the best location with inlet and outlet at pretty much 90s but I had no other choice really for location. The down pipe was a pain to fit under heater box etc.
I’ll get some links for the Ebay parts
All tig welded

Thanks in advance for the links. I was going to purchase a log manifold kit but the cost is $500 plus, but I would almost prefer to buy just the log manifold and then fab up the rest of my hot side. I only have access to a mig welder though. I have seen a lot of waste gate configurations and hopefully you won’t have any issues. I bet you saved quite a bit of money doing your own fab versus the kits below.

Here is the kit KB Racing

I looked at the kB , trick and fauler racing manifold $500 and up usd and then tack on another 40% for us Canadians as our dollar is crap. I also looked at the hooker manifold but I didn’t like how you still had to fab up a up pipe.
I spent about $150 for all the pipe and the flanges then some small tubing for the waistegate so say $200 for all manifold material . I’m glad I built my own as location is key for fitting everything else .
I forgot to mention I had to swap engine mounts as well as the 67-72 pedestal mounts hit the log manifold so I swapped in some square body c20 clam shell type mounts . Way better design and the set the engine up higher.

Re: Turbo build in my 65

For the oil drain line off the turbo I was originally going to dump it into timing cover but there’s not a lot of clearance there behind balancer so the oil pan was much easier place to install fitting and it was a straight shot down pretty much from bottom of turbo . Used a 1/2 npt-10 an . Dropping the pan was way quicker as well then pulling the timing cover if you have room to pull pan of course
Aslo had to add a IAT sensor as maf is deleted and will be tuned with speed density

Very nice! Super jealous of the manifold fab work. I wish I could fab and weld lol. I just pre ordered a set of Fahler speed twin turbo setup manifolds. I’m running a single but I really like how he builds them to clear stock plug wires. Your truck will be a ripper for sure! Keep us updated.

Thanks guys! Got a few more loose ends to finish up on it and will have it on road shortly if spring ever gets here. Still a foot of snow on the ground here

Re: Turbo build in my 65

What boost goals are you shooting for? That turbo sounds like a high HP turbo. I am guessing you will be shooting for high boost with the smaller 44mm wastegate.

I’ll probably run it at 8-10 pounds for most part. I’d like to see it hit around 650 ish hp at wheel on the dyno for a couple pulls . I was 380 at the wheel last summer

That seems like a good goal to shoot for. I bet you won’t have issues hitting 650. Gonna be a big jump from 380.

Re: Turbo build in my 65

Rerouted my exhaust abit and made a cross over to retain my dual exhaust out the back . Was a pain making the cross over to clear suspension and driveshaft etc.

Nice work on that exhaust. I wish I had a lift.

Re: Turbo build in my 65

Finally got my truck tuned yesterday and she layed down some good numbers. 650hp @ 9 psi and 580 ft/lbs torque. I did have to change out that smaller intercooler for a larger one. I’m really happy with the results had a perma grin ripping around in it last night. I’m going need rear tires very soon lol

Re: Turbo build in my 65

Awesome numbers, congrats. Did you have any issues with Boost creep with your Wastegate being at 90 degrees?

My plans are to run the 7875 turbo as well but the .96 version. How quickly do you begin building boost, what RPM?

I haven't had a chance to check rpm. Was too busy trying to keep thing straight on road lol.. It does spool quick

haha, I am sure that is true. Thanks for sharing and let us know how it does once you have more seat time.
