Re: Move the gas tank or no?
I don't remember smelling gas in the cab during 34 years of driving my 69 C10. However, I have smelled gas fumes in the garage due to the vented filler cap. But it only seems to happen after a drive. Gotta come up with a solution to that some day.
As for the tank behind the seat, I think it was a bad idea. But probably not as bad as a Pinto tank near the rear bumper!

Re: Move the gas tank or no?
I'm on the fence with this myself. The "project" I recently bought already has one mounted under the bed but has the filler in the floor which will be a pain to fill as you have to stretch over the bed side or tailgate to reach it. I'm also concerned with water getting into the tank from rain or melting snow. At this point I'm considering going back stock with everything new. The gas tanks on my motorcycles are pretty much in my lap. I try to be a careful driver, but you can't drive for the other person.

Then there's getting fuel to the carb. Back of seat tank has none of these problems.

Re: Move the gas tank or no?
I've never moved the tank from original location because I see no need to. But I do have a Blazer tank kit I'm thinking to use on my '67 short bed as an auxiliary tank

Re: Move the gas tank or no?
Kind of dated, but I went a different route. Added a 29 gallon fuel cell in a DEE-CEE storage trunk. Some thought it was unique.

Plus, you don't have to drop the tank to replace the sending unit. |

Re: Move the gas tank or no?
That's a heck of a locking gas cap and 29 gallons!

Re: Move the gas tank or no?
If you can just take it all out.
Sure there is no gain or such benefit if you don't value safety. One thing I did not catch been mention was you can not hide the spare tire if you relocate the tank under the bed. Good Luck... |

Re: Move the gas tank or no?
For those of you trying to make this a safety issue please stop. If it was such a damn hazard none of us would be driving these trucks because they would have all burnt up in the last 50 odd years. Every car fire I have ever seen involved the engine compartment. You know where there are things actually hot enough to ignite gasoline. Just admit that you moved it because that's what you wanted to do.

Re: Move the gas tank or no?
And it got the job done. no reason to reengineer stuff on a fifty plus year old truck. It's worked for fifty years it'll work another fifty.

Re: Move the gas tank or no?
Only by chance or my Lord willing that I did not die in my rollover accident in the 72 in my younger years. There is a reason changes happen. Gas tanks are no longer in the cabin.

Re: Move the gas tank or no?
I think we should agree to disagree....there is more than one way to skin a cat.
With that being said I installed a Boyd's tank under the bed and love it! |
