check your wire first, sounds like it is either shorted or open...sorry I can never remember which is pegged full

Thanks Joe I'll check it tonight. I think you 're right. The 1/4 when turned off was messing with me. Checked the wires with an ohm meter. There not shorted. Ran one wire from the sending unit to the gage and another from the fuse box to the gage; same thing peged. Hooked up the wires to a old dash/gage from my 66; same thing peged. I wishing I still had my 66 gas tank. Never throw anything away. I do like the dash of the 66 better. It has gages insted of lights. Going to see if I can find a sending unit on a old deserted truck I know about.

Re: Daverods project 66

Decided to pull my sending unit before going out to the old truck to look for a new one . Look what I found. Just not sure how to fix it? Looks to small to weld. I guess it's copper. I've never braised anything and have no idea how. Anyone? What about jb weld?

JB weld would work, but it's getto. If not cleaned up right you could have it fall off and get stuck. How much is a new sending unit?

I think that is pretty common.
you could probably braze it with a propane torch.

Checked it out. It is getto, but I'm kinda getto. Trying to clean up my act. It does'nt conduct electrons. New unit is $50 plus shipping. $50 saved.

I did'nt understand what brazen was all about. I have soldered copper pipes before. Cleaned it up and soldered it back together. Works good now still have to mess with bending the rod to get it read right. Thanks Joe. I think it's within a 1/4 or so. Time to go burn some gas.

Re: Daverods project 66

cool man, brazing and soldering are pretty much the same idea, typically when you solder you use an iron and solder, brazing you use a torch and some type of filler rod.

Re: Daverods project 66

My green temp light comes on when I start up then it goes out after a couple minutes. Is this normal? I'm thinking that maybe it's overheating and the red bulb is burnt out. It doesn't seem hot. Went to swap bulbs did'nt even have a red bulb wrecked the green one getting it out. Guess I'm off to get some bulbs.

Thats the COLD lite!!! The original sender had 2 readings. Cold when you start and then operating temp. If it overheats it turns red.

I was worried because it goes out after awhile but I guess thats normal. Good thing I checked because it did'nt have a bulb in the red light.

Re: Daverods project 66

Cleaned 50 years of crap off my A arms and cross member. Lowered the arms down and cut 1 1/2 coils off. Putting on some new pads and lines while I'm at it. Can't wait to put the wheels back on. Put a new bulb in my red and green warning light now nothing works. Have to mess with it some more. Habor freight jack stands $19 for 2. There going fast get some now. My truck looks like a stink bug.

Re: Daverods project 66

Messed with my temp lights some more. If I take the red light bulb out then the green light works. If I put the red bulb in nothing works. There all new bulbs. Maybe a short? Maybe a bad temp senser? Now I know why it did'nt have a red bulb.http://picasaweb.google.com/normanme...eat=directlink I think I need the next page.

Well, the green light works? Except when the red bulb is pluged in. If I take the red bulb out the green works. Turned out the Temp. sending unit? going into the radiator hose is messed up. When I move the wires going into things change ( one light, no lights, both lights). Can't seem to find one in LMC.

Anybody know what the thing with the wires going into it is called and where I can get a new one? It goes to the temp. warning lights on a 64.

Re: Daverods project 66

Ordinarily a temperature sending unit has only one wire. Looks like that one has 2 or 3 wires? I don't know what else it would be being it is in the coolant.

Re: Daverods project 66

It has 2 wires and it looks like it goes in the coolant. When I wiggle it it makes my temp warning lights (green/red) blink on and off. I think it's bad and I need a new one.
