Re: Calling all high school 67-72 owners!

i just graduated highschool, but my junior year i drove my 1983 chevy, then sold it and bought the 1970 i have that i drove to school my senior year. i have done everything on my own, my father believes it teaches me a life lesson or something like that.. i dk lol, but i am pretty proud of what i have done. all the work was also done by myself on both trucks. i also started a car club with some of my friends called H.M.H.R. meaning home made hot rods. it was pretty fun, but now they're all going to college and i'm going to the navy.. i have pics of both on cardomain, just click the link to see it

71 cheyenne, nice truck and the hub caps don't look bad. And its a original 350 with a s10 tranny behind it or a 250 with a S10 tranny behind it.

My truck! 1969 Longbed TCI TH400 StreetFighter with a 2200RPM stall and a Yearone powercrate 350 that made 403 hp and 413 ftlbs of torque, should be on the road real soon,

Re: Calling all high school 67-72 owners!

Mine shows 5025 pound gross weight with heavy duty coils and every weight adding option option but the big block. Given a guess at the payload, which should be atleast 1200 pounds, that leaves my truck at 3800 pounds. There's no way 4400 pounds is normal for a low option half ton. A new dodge regular cab weighs 4800 or so pounds and they're the pigs of the class.

Re: Calling all high school 67-72 owners!

Thanks. Its a stock 250 and a t5 from a v6 s10. It used to have the old 4 speed manual, and in conjunction with wore out syncros, manual 4 wheel drum brakes, manual steering, and wore out suspension components, it was not all that fun to drive. But now its a blast, especially with the nice 5 speed. My next goal is to throw the 305 HO from an 85 camaro with Performer RPM and Edelbrock AFB carb in there and evenutally get a Tremec TKO-500 behind it. But thats alot of $$$. lol

Re: Calling all high school 67-72 owners!

71 why are you wanting to get a 305 and not a 327,350,or 383 is it because how far you drive every day? And 72custom it should weigh around 4400 because my 69 short step side with a 350 and the 4speed half ton weighs 3750 or 3850 and with few low options it has factory ac but no brake booster.

Re: Calling all high school 67-72 owners!

Well, a couple of reasons. First being that I like to be different than everyone else. I know that 350's are very good engines for alot of reasons, but everyone else has one. And second I like to test my abilities of producing power out of smaller engines, for example I love tinkering with old pedal mopeds and making them go 50mph+ on single speed engines under 70CC's. And finally, the engine was given to me for free with only 27,000 miles on it with the tuned port induction system and full wiring harness and with parts laying around my dads shop was able to build a complete engine for nothing
And of course because I like good gas mileage. But as of recently my plans might change a bit because I am getting a 2000 audi a6 for a good price, so then I will be getting 18 city/27 highway instead of 10 city/17 highway. lol

Only 27,000 miles! That's awesome. Even though it's a 305, the tpi intake makes excelllent torque at low rpm too.

Re: Calling all high school 67-72 owners!

305s are just generally junk. And the fuel mileage between them and the 350 is negligible. Plus, more CI the better in a truck which needs the lower end torque.

Though, you can make them into the sweet little 327 with some work and have a respectable motor.

Re: Calling all high school 67-72 owners!

Just because it has less CI doesnt make it junk. Ok so what if you cant put the biggest sized valves avaliable for a small block in a 305 or you would be wasting your time.
http://www.goingfaster.com/spo/325_h...chevrolet.html

give that a read. Lets see, since i am using a carb for now, then lets say I started with a L69, which is the same as the LB9 (what I have), just with a 4bbl. That puts out 190 HP@4800 240 ft/lb@3200.

Car Craft (the people in the article) Started with an 82 LG4 and that put out 145@4000 240@2000 stock. Just by headers, 3" exhaust, and HEI they put out 197 HP @ 4,000 rpm. 261 ft/lb torque @ 3,100 rpm. Not to shabby.

Well eventually I will put headers on mine and an exhaust system that is suitable, and it already has HEI, so theoretically my engine should put out approx. 50hp and 20 ft/lb more than stock, so 240hp and 260 ft/lb. Thats with a stock manifold and carb.

Then Car Craft put a Edelbrock Performer intake and 750 holly double pumper and gained 20hp and 24ft/lb.

Ok so with my manifold and similar carb, I am now at about 260hp and 280 ft/lb. Oh,btw, Car Craft's engine still has the stock cam in it, I have a cam out of a 350 crate engine that my dad put in his 91 chevy truck, but he put a roller cam out of an LT-1 in his engine instead. And the cam Car Craft put in there 305 is not to far off from the specs on the 350 cam. They got an increase of 53HP and 6 ft/lb. Not any more torque but now my ball park figures are about 313HP around the 5k mark and about 280-290 ft/lb around 3800 rpm mark.
Also, you gain about 12-15HP for each point of compression you go up, and their lg4 has 8.6:1, my 305 has 9.5:1.

Now, those numbers arnt to impressive to most people, but honestly, I dont really care if my truck has the most power or not. Besides, with the 250, I can spin the tires off the line till a little before I shift, and that is a somewhat wore out engine. New it put out 155hp @ 4200 235ft/lb@1600. A good amount of more power.

And as for MPG, take a look at this: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=1494

I know they are in cars that are a little lighter and more aerodynamic. And one last thing, my dad was the one who picked out this set up, and has been building cars his whole life, and build a 283 in a 71 vega that got 28mpg. So I have a feeling he knows what hes talking about

I'm not trying to sound like I know everything, I'm just trying to change the way people feel about the little 305 that is "junk".

Edit: Oh, and there is a difference of 25hp and 35ft/lb between the L69(carb) and the LB9(TPI), which is somewhere in my future with this truck.

Re: Calling all high school 67-72 owners!

I don't like when people hate on 305's. When gas was so high with my last truck I really wanted to build up a 335 (3.75 stroke in a 305) roller cam stroker. The one thing I didn't like about the article you posted was the torque. Sure it made 315 horsepower, but only about the same torque and at a higher rpm. My 350, when bone stock to the snorkel airleaner and tiny exhaust made only 175 horsepower, but also made 300 lb/ft of torque at only 2400 rpm. In a truck I just think a 305 should be left more towards stock to retain some torque. But the tpi manifold is supposed to be excellent for torque. I could see a 2004r/305 tpi truck getting an easy 20 mpg.

Ok texan does have some good points here:

the fuel mileage is USUALLY not much different between a 305 and a 350 stock. (302's and 283's are good mileage motors, but good luck on finding one)

more CI is better in trucks-- OK I have a truck with a 3.08 rear end, IF YOU HAVE HIGH GEARS (3.08, 3.23 etc) you WILL get better mileage out of a 350 than a 305

personally, if I wanted to get good mileage and power I'd do a GenIII 5.3 swap!!!!! you really can't beat a 5.3 in mileage and its not really that expensive

the common oppinion on 305's is that they are good boat anchors, but If you want to prove everybody wrong on that, you go ahead, I'll help if I can!!! I'd use the TPI 305 for now and research what it takes to turn it into a TPI 350

GOOD LUCK ON WHATEVER YOU DO

Re: Calling all high school 67-72 owners!

If I was you, i'd probably get a lower mileage or rebuilt Vortec 350 long block when I got the funds, and I think they make adaptors to mate it with the tpi intake. If not, I know they make runners to adapt it with the plenum for that app. Talk about a perfect truck motor, a 383 version of the same would be about all that could beat it for torque in a small block package. Tpi cars take off like a biotch, but fade out around 5000rpm stock. Perfect for an everyday truck.

Re: Calling all high school 67-72 owners!

That's all fine and dandy, but your making power way up top. That is a characteristic that's fine for cars, or something that's at the track all the time. Not in a truck for the street, where stock, an original 350 puts out more torque lower down where you can actually use it. Or where you need it to move a heavy truck off the line.

With putting your power up so high, and your torque, you LOOSE fuel efficiency as the truck is not building power where as needed when driving, and is not being ran efficiently. Yes, 28mpg in a carbed 283 in a Vega is possible, that car is sub 3000 lbs if I recall right with an even smaller motor. But once your dealing with a 4000lbs steel brick, the factors change a lot.

Hot rods are a lot lighter, and a ton more aerodynamic in most all cases. Fuel mileage is heavily changed based on drag, and trucks can't easily beat that. You should see some of the extremes that one has to go threw to achieve this, over on Ecomodder.

You've spent a lot of money building something that makes stock 350 power at higher RPMs, which would be EXCELLENT in a Camaro, street rod, Vega, Miata, Se7en.... (I can dream), but for a truck, your going to get a totally different result on the street.

Quote:
With peak torque at 4,800 rpm, the 325 HP 305 would definitely need some stiff rear end gears (I'd suggest a minimum of 3.73 ratio) plus a high stall converter if the car had auto trans. In my opinion the WP Torquer heads are the better choice for a street engine. I think that a 300HP 305 with 308 ft/lbs at 3,900 rpm, would be a nice street / strip combination.
Run what you will, and I applaud difference, but, there's better applications for a 305...

edit: meh, I'm grouchy, and irrelevant with this..
