Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I am in the process of reassembling my 64 shortbed fleetside. I fired the 406 SBC last week and it smoked like a coal burner. Engine had been sitting for 3 years. (this truck restoration has been a 20yr process)
So after all of the time and attention to detail. I pulled the engine and tranny back out to disassemble the freshly painted engine and find out why #7 hole is spewing oil.

I guess an oil ring is stuck. Really stinks as this engine has 20 min on it!!

I am so close to finishing this thing! Assembly is torture! lol

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Vacuumed out the big panel, did some test fitting for the storage benches for the back, flushed the radiator and refilled with new coolant for summer. Installed new temp gauge, installed new gas gauge, hooked up the speedo, pulled the front bumper. It's nice to be back working on the trucks again.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I worked on the interior last night as well. Trying to get the seat belts fitted and test fit the carpet and door panels etc.
I am thinking about wrapping the door panels in black vinyl?

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I got my bed a little closer to level and adjusted the panhard bar so I can drive higher. Also removed my instrument panel trying to figure out how to do the gauges.

Installed my u-joint, painted the drive shaft and re-intalled. I also filled the holes from the gun rack I removed.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Tried to fix gas gauge with new sender/wire. Still no luck. Barely moves off empty. Wonder if I have 90 ohm gauge with 30 ohm sender?

Try again tomorrow.

I added oil... She's sucking a lot back these days. Then drove it to make sure some of that oil went to good use.

Replaced my column shifter bushings and aligned the shifter arms. Put the name decals on the front bumper and tailgate.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

ordered 108 button head stainless steel bolts and washers in different sizes to replace all the visible bolts on the engine, inner fenders, fenders, etc.

Even if my painting sucks, the bolts will look good!

We finally decided on the color scheme - dark purple with the tan silverado interior. Going to fab up a vinyl over fiberglass shell dash cap and headliner and cover the door panels in the vinyl as well.

I will be so glad to get all the patch panels in so we can start, sanding and painting.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

dantimdad,
For your button head stainless bolts, you might want to check out the Mc Master-Carr catalog and get some of the clear nylon flat washers to place under the button head bolts for the inner fenders etc. to protect the paint from scratching or marring. Just a thought.
