Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

So the unused TRS Side nets got purchased for £25.00 and Duncan has posted them down

Plan is to make side doors as discussed before.

I do not want a roof or doors on this thing, and it came without any of that.

So I started to look for Land Roved Series 3 door hinges or something similar.

Found some.........

On EBay

Found some more.....

I did not like the pricing though.

Kept scrolling down and down and down.

Then found these used items.

The real thing.

Of course I bought them, immediately

Price?

£13.50 delivered.

We have hinges it seems.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

So @PaulY and I were chatting about the screen and roll bar that I want lower in both cases.

I also want to slope the screen back, just a little bit.

This will mean finding a new screen to adapt, or making up a fresh one. As I do not think cutting up the fibreglass one that is there, and patching is back together, will really work very well.

So either find something off a Beach Buggy, or even a kit car item that is not longer in use.

And Plan B which is probably really Plan A will be to make a new frame and get custom cut glass, make a sensible frame support and slant back.

The existing screen is held in place with what looks like silicone, possibly an automotive type, and three domed head bolts, with nuts from under the dash. So it can be removed, albeit at the risk of looking real scruffy once done.

So screen back from current position, same base. And also shorter by up to 100mm

When you look at the posed pic of me in the RX8 seat.

I think it can go shorter.

As will the roll bar and harness mounting bar.

Front profile of screen base.

Sizes I am working with on screen.

Side to side 59.5” or 1510mm

Total height 19” or 480mm Glass height 400mm

Glass width 54” or 3980mm at the bottom

Glass width 50” or 1270mm at the top.

And stolen from another thread

Sans screen

And same car once painted and lowered.

So, as always looking for ideas, suggestions, random or not so random.

From speed boat to Lotus 7 or Duval (which ain’t happening)

Whatcha think?

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

@glenanderson seems to have a share in this build now

I was headed for Uncle Bobs yard today, but he was not there, so I could not investigate the Land Rover he had offered me before, or ask if he had another spare screen to sell, though we know hoarders rarely sell anything.

How high ?

Rezin Rockit : Total height 19” or 480mm Glass height 400mm

Land Rover Series 2

Rezin Rockit : Top of screen width 55”

Land Rover Series 2

Rezin Rockit: Bottom of screen width 59.5”

Land Rover Series 2

Nice design on top edge.

Screen.

And finally........

Best of all.

With a bit of design cleverness, one may just see this car with a fold down screen.

Would that be cool or what?

Needs a bit of a clever design to keep the screen upright. And no, I do not want to tie it to the roll bar really.

Another parcel landed for the car today.

All the way from Scotland

Thanks Jimi

I did go look for my rev counter or tachometer if you are American.

Could not find it.

Yet.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

So I said “EARLY DOORS” and know some already know what it’s about,

Some will get it, some won’t.

Like fake boobs on a woman, they serve absolutely no purpose, but they will look good to most of us.

Inspiration goes a long way back, in the 80’s I was part of the pit crew for a Sand Master race team. Side nets always looked cool.

I do not want a roof, or fully functioning doors on this thing. Maybe a simple square bikini type roof thing like @Ivanhoe is planning for Medusa.

With changing the roll bar, screen height etc, a standard fibreglass roof which was made for these, but of course would be unobtanium certainly would not fit without some fettling. Doors and sides would be affected too.

So I decided to find and buy a pair of racing side window nets to incorporate in the “Doors” as illustrated below.

They are ultimately for my pleasure.

So using CAD and a bit of my vision and a long dowel plus masking tape, this was the result.

Add in the Scissors, Sharpie, masking tape and a pizza box..... you have CAD.

Next up will be converting it into a light, framed Unit, to attach to the hinges that are in the post, and to create a simple latch for securing it.

I took the CAD mock up off and have laid it flat in order to get measurements so that I know what materials I need to get together to make them up.

Still waiting for V5c and also need carport roof up before the big stuff happens.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

So my current postie is a lady called Sasha.

Suddenly I look forward to having parcels delivered, maybe I should order more stuff.

Working from home kinda sucks, it’s lonely, trust me.

She has been chatty, and in less of a rush to just throw your post or parcels at you, like an Aldi checkout assistant.

Today she delivered a small, heavy parcel. It surprised me.

Check the price of postage.

So the hinges I had bought for £13.50 had arrived.

I messaged @PaulY and mentioned the postage which was included in the price, kinda bothered me.

Before I could say what I planned, he suggested I offer to pay part of the postage back to the seller. There are many people right now in financial dire straits, selling stuff to keep alive.

So £3.50 off the £10.00 is £6.50 and £4.00 is probably 70% of the knock. Keeping up in the back?

So I messaged him

And this was his reply.

Hopefully Karma is happy too.

Life is good if you try spread a bit of the good.

Then I tried the hinges which are bloody heavy, like a pound of butter, up next to the mock up door.

Then outside to try them up against the Rezin Rockit, looks like the original hinges were a lot smaller.

There is also a significant space or rebate behind it where the door frame will fit in.

I spoke to Darren earlier too, asking if I could use his some of his tools at the shop.

I need to put a slight bend in the leading edge plates to deflect wind and allow a place to attach the net. Using my own home made metal bender may not be so tidy.

Darrens will do, thankfully.

I also asked if I could use his bead roller..... yup, roll a bead around the edge to create a but of strength and rigidity.

He replies that I was welcome to come over and use any tools, and that there was a cat waiting for attention.

Made me smile for sure.

Life is good yes.

Quicky before bedtime.

Mate Fil has done a couple more designs.

And then this.

Needs more fine tuning, I think.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

So another week has come and gone, and still COVID-19 keeps us prisoner.

But in between, we can keep our sanity in many ways.

Today @glenanderson popped up for a nice 3 hour visit, which saw us putting the world to rights, and ironing out some design ideas for the Rezin Rockit, both the screen and suspension was looked at.

We discussed the state of the world, unions, train schedules, EasyJet, health, welfare, scrapping cars, hoarding.

Just a perfect afternoon after a hectic week.

Poor guy, inbetween I was still fielding customer an colleague concerns and wrote a short test on a clinical trial

Glen came to drop of his newly galvanised front window frame from his Land Rover, for me to use in the mocking up part of the build.

He also brought a load of M6 and M10 bolts from his stash, and some door mechanisms, a windscreen securing bolts and plate, plus a shim to copy for the new to me, door hinges.

And a book on building a sports car at home, that will be filled with tips.

So eventually it became time for him to head home and me to get on the Friday wrap up Zoom meeting.

We had loaded the tractor @CraigRK had brought for him last weekend, and the spare mower that had stood in my garage, then garden for too long.

We had offered up the screen too, thankfully without its glass as it gets to be a bit heavy After a while.

I need to use it for making up the supports for it up front.

Shared on GarageJounal.com

This Jeep.

It may be a bit thick but the roll bar has the right angle and design for what I would like.

Roughly this look planned.

Screen laid back. Roll bar somewhere like the lilac shows.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Mickey has me figured out.

This morning he was playing outside.....

Making a load of noise.

I just spent £10.00 and bought the noise for the Rezin Rockit

So @glenanderson brought over his restored Land Rover front screen frame yesterday for me to use as a lighter than glazed mock up item.

They attach with a bolt either side of the cab, and are held in place a Y-shaped plate and nut either side

He brought me a drivers side item, with wing nut for quick release, which left me needing a passenger side item.

My current plan is to create a single unit, like a Twin Lilly on a stalk to hold both the bolt and retainer plate, and then to bolt down the side, incorporating both of the door hinges and a backing plate insure the body down from the A-pillar. This should give enough strength to hold and sustain the window frame once glazed.

The plan is also to add a wedge of very high density foam under the screen, as it is done on the Land Rover to increase the slope rearward.

This will automatically lower the screen some more visually.

So this morning I posted a request for a plate to buy on various forums, as well as on my general FB home page.

Within half and hour, my buddy Ricky, who bought the Chrome Smoothies off the C10 Chevy just over 5 years ago, contacted me nd said he would investigate a lead he had.

An hour ago he messaged that he had been given one as it was a ‘useless part” that would never be sold, and it would be in the post next week.

So we have one passenger side plate now. Need to get a nice wing nut to add for finger control.

Karma?

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

So.

Screen time.

I really like the flow of this screen and roll bar on this Land Rover.

No plan for a full cage or screen roll bar.

So when @glenanderson came over and brought his screen for me to use as a mock up sample, we offered it up.

And some idea of the tilted back look, use your imagination to place it in its final resting place.

So yesterday Sally helped me get a few pics, in order to get a better visualisation of what is planned.

Side view

Starting to like this.

Looking forward to creating the supports and then removing the existing screen.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Well, some of you may have forgotten by now.

But I have waited since August to get a carport steel frame up.

Lots of jobs have been on hold as I wanted the carport completed before I carry on raking stuff apart etc.

Remember summer?

Posts in perspective.

Loads of work to get to this simple point.

Other direction

Got a WhatsApp message from the steel guy today.

My steels are ready, now he is waiting for some dry days to deliver and put up the steels.

I had also asked him for grey oxide paint, rather than red oxide, better reflection of light of course.

Once the steels are up, the next job is to order the roofing materials, and hopefully then Mickey and I can get the roof up fast.

After which the Rezin Rockit will move in there, along with some other clutter, nd we can carry on with it, given the V5c arrives.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Bikini roof was in my head from the start, despite not wanting a roof or much weather protection.

After cutting the grass, I was weeding the paving in front of the garage, and found this under the storage caravan.

Also found that the welding caravans one wheel that I pumped p on Monday, had blown out, so need to go get a new tyre fitted.

Bikini time again: Attaching it to the front screen in a way that prevents water ingress would be a challenge, but this old trick should work.

I need a longer one by 150mm or so, but this can work too.

Caravan window hinge. Simple C shaped design, sew some rope onto the roof canvas/vinyl and slide it into the groove.

Secure up front, attach rear tails along roll bar.

Job done. Happy days.

Easy.

Thanks Mate.

I noticed how fast. You guys built that structure.

Over here it’s taken me 5 weeks to get to the point where the steels are made and painted.

Wish I could kick his butt.

Cant upload pictures, but they are 16 inch widened peugeot wheels 4x108 with et 31 and we had them on a Audi 80. With new tires newly powdercoated gloss black.

250 euro's and they are your's [/quote]

Funny how these things escalate. Messages above copied.

Thanks @68mustang

So one needs to get them from Werkendam in the Netherlands to Rochester 🚀. Maybe there is a 🐎 express opportunity out there.

Looks like 205 R45 16’s and 215 R45 16’s if I read correctly.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Offered this paint station today.

No use to me. But cleaned up it should be useful to a home builder. All works.

Managed to get a friend to give it a new home.

And four wheels with winter tyres.

New home found.

And one I did keep.

Jaguar headlight bowl. Got to be worth having to someone.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Crazy as it way seem.

My one caravan had a blowout on the driveway.

Was looking for a 4 stud, 13”’ caravan wheel and tyre. Or just a used tyre to fit on my wheel as tyre shops had no part worn 13” tyres.

So plan B

Fixed this tonight after work using a space saver Mickey tossed a year or two ago. Same stud pattern, but centre bore was too tight.

Thanks to Andy my old lodger, I used a tungsten carbide burr to trim it away to fit.

Job done.

Yes, different caravan, swapped out wheels, keeping the welding caravan once carport is up.

The storage one will be headed to a new home.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Still, waiting, for the V5c which the letter from DVLA suggested could be here by tomorrow or early next week if all went well.

HELP AND ADVICE NEEDED PLEASE.

Opinions we know, differ a lot.

I like this style of wheel based on the Driver Style cars from the Philippines

Saw these last night. And at £80.00 it seems a worthwhile avenue to investigate, if one can make changes at an affordable, SAFE level.
I am not clever with the whole pcd/et/spacer/wobble bolt/tuner wheel bolt thing, but know what I like the look of, and also that not everything is actually doable in the real world.

Seller had these fitted to his car using some of these bolts.

Remember, the Rezin Rockit has old skool Ford hubs with regular studs....... so where does one turn with conversions etc, one rear drum is missing, one front brake calliper is busted off, so starting fresh is possible.
Does one go with spacers (not sure I like them a lot, but....)

This is what they offer,et - 35 so a long way from et - 0 needed to fill out especially the rear arches.

So these are the wheels, one has a small dent, which I do suspect can be traightened with a decent protected lump hammer if needs, but not too bothered as he said it was still air tight.

Two have tyres fitted as well.

So come on clever people........

Can it be done?

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Just heard from seller.

He just measured and they are 4x100 and 4x 114/5

So I guess it becomes a matter of getting these converted onto a 4x108 hub.

If that is even doable in the realm of eBay and others. Some info here https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread...ezin-rockit-et

Unpredictable weather

Galaxy made me smile yesterday as it swallowed 3 meter lengths of 8mm rod without anything sticking out the windows.

Answers on a postcard as to what it’s for.
