Re: Thank you to our military members and veterans
Sometimes people take for granted that our military is the reason this country is GREAT. Despite our problems, it is by far the BEST country in the world because of our military. USAF 1988-1993

Re: Thank you to our military members and veterans
I have something to contribute that may help to make a difference.I haven't been able to do it this time in Iraq but during the first trip many of our servicemen made over there I managed to help alleviate some of the sacrafice our servicemen make.I realized that one of the military men in my neighborhood had deployed and wanted to find a way to show my appreciation. So I mowed his lawn and during the cold weather I shoveled his walk.I know it may not sound like much but his wife didn't have to do it or do without it being done.Service pay certainly wont provide the $$ for this stuff.Sometimes the little things we can do for the spouses of the military make a big difference just in the fact that they know they are not alone. Many of the service people I have talked to are worried their families will not have the support in everyday things like this,if you have a chance to do something even small like this it is a way of saying"I personally appreciate your service"
I thought I would share this idea and mostly wanted to ttt so we can keep it going.

Re: Thank you to our military members and veterans
Many times during the course of a year I think of the men I served with and of those who served before and after me but most specially at Veterans Day. I have always believed the veterans of WW 2 were never given the honor and grateful thinks they so justly deserved for their sacrifice which without their devotion to duty perhaps we would have a much differant world than we know today. It's sad that it took nearly 50 odd years to build a memorial to them after so many have passed who will never know their service was finally recognized. The war in Iraq and the numerous conflicts our country has found itself in over the course of years may not always have been "popular" with the citizens of this country but we must always support the men and women who serve and have served. Duty and Country are more than just words. I have two friends from my Viet Nam service days on " The Wall " in Washington, DC, who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that I and others may enjoy the freedoms we have. As I grow older and my service days fade further in the past one thing that gives me pride is the fact of my service at a time my country called upon me and so many others. God Bless the USA !!

If I was a multi-millionare I would be making rent and mortgage payments for all the families where a spouse is serving over there in my way of saying thanks for serving our country and making the personal sacrifices.

Re: Thank you to our military members and veterans
Our family just welcomed a nephew home from Iraq last week. It's really good to have him back! That is really rough duty and we honor & salute all of those that are making that big sacrifice.
Thank you for the great job you are doing and we can't wait to get all of you back home! |

Re: Thank you to our military members and veterans
From those of us who are over in the Middle East now, many many thanks for all the prayers, good wishes and kind words. More importantly, thanks for remembering us. If you have "issues" with what's going on in Iraq, please address those with your local congressman ans senator. The great Americans that are over here are simply doing what they were told to do, and doing an incredibly amazing job of it. If you could see how hard those soldiers and JR NCOs worked, and how good they are at what they do, it would simply astound you.
Not a knock against those that chose not to serve, but for those of us who did, take a minute on Veterans' Day and reach around and pat yourself on the back.

Re: Thank you to our military members and veterans
wow! this thread is awsome and with every post i have read it makes me proud to say i am associated with you guys and gals and to all of you out there like my brother that has served thier duties by leaving a spouse and a new beautiful little girl at home. his only comment when he left was that he was doing what he had to do to make him feel better about his life (made a few wrong choices in life) and doing what he had to do to keep his little girl alive and well until she grows old and grey he then turned around and walked away. He has since then been overseas twice and has really grown up to be a great young man and as far as im concerned a saint. so with this being said i great big salute to those that have risen and fallen for what we call, LIFE

Re: Thank you to our military members and veterans
I had an F-14 Tomcat stored in my hangar at work once. And talked to the pilot the following morning when he came to get his plane. He told me that it's an awesome feeling to know that any day he takes off from the carrier, what he may get into will be on the news the next day.

Re: Thank you to our military members and veterans
Liz, thanks for the post. As a veteran of 'Nam, the son of a WWII vet, and the proud father of a current serviceman (USAF), I can't begin to express my persoanal thanks to all who have gone on before us. As they say, "All gave some, Some gave All", and for those who gave everything and for their families, it is especially nice to remember them. Not just on an annual basis, but every day.
I drive a school bus, in my semi-retirement, and I haul 6th and 7th grade kids to/from school. I always try to remind them of the special days that are meaningful, with Veterans Day being one of them. Unfortunately, many of them have no clue as to the significance of the day. A few, however, know it to be the day it is because one of them has a parent in the military or who may have died in service to their country.

Re: Thank you to our military members and veterans
I have been in the Army almost 19 years now, and I have been deployed to the middle east 5 times. You might think I know what sacrifice is, but I saw a yellow vinyl sign (like the support our troops ribbons) on the back of a truck the other day. It read, "My husband died for your freedom." Now, that's sacrifice...that's deep.
