Re: Anyone Using 4.1 Straight Six Engine?

Went through the carb and cleaned the dirt out, hooked everything up. And still have this problem, I do think its time to buy or make a new intake manifold using my Quadra jet on a I6

Re: Anyone Using 4.1 Straight Six Engine?

Just wondering if anyone has thought to use 4.2lt 6 from Trailblazer?

Haven't seen that one but the 262 v6 is a great motor.

You can purchase a Clifford intake and just buy an adapter to adapt a quadra jet carb to it. Clifford makes a sweet intake. You can see it at Clifford Performance.com

Non-integrated head 6 with a good carb and hei ignition is the way to go.

Re: Anyone Using 4.1 Straight Six Engine?

This is in my '64 Chevy II wagon but it's a '70 250 with the Clifford intake, shorty headers and Holley 390cfm 4 brl. carb. Actually gets up and moves fairly well.

Mine, I also have the heated Clifford intake, Holley 390 and shorty cast Langdon headers. It's also sporting a huge cam, lump ported, milled and rechambered heads with bigger valves and beehive springs, studs etc. bored .40 over, balanced, HEI and it moves really well.

Re: Anyone Using 4.1 Straight Six Engine?

Here's my 292....little bigger then a 250. All stock except for an HEI, clifford intake and headers, and a 600 cfm edelbrock performer carb....The internals are 48 years old...and it has 150,000 on it...compression around 110 in all cylinders, but runs strong and really gets up an goes. I currently have another 292 I'm hotrodding which will easily compete with 350's when its done.

Is the 292 I6 motor mounts off on one side? The I6 I have was perfect line up with the v8

Re: Anyone Using 4.1 Straight Six Engine?

Personally, I'd stay away from the integrated head.

I used to warehouse, sell, and deliver remanufactured engines for an automotive engine rebuilder, and we had a strict policy of not selling integrated heads. The conventional wisdom was that they were prone to cracking due to heat transfer. We'd simply counsel owners to buy a non-integrated model and find the necessary manifolds, etc on their own. As I recall, we did a few integral heads, though the warranty was extremely limited.

Whether or not they're actually as lousy as I've heard, I have no idea. I've never owned an integral. However, I trust my old employer's knowledge implicitly. They did excellent work but sold the business and retired in 2003, or I'd still work there.

As for inline sixes, I've owned and loved a 250 and a 292, two Ford 240s and a 300, an AMC 258, and a Landcruiser 2F. I've worked on and driven slant sixes, a GMC 302, a Ford 262, Chevy 235, International 241 and 501, Hudson 308 (what a sweet sound!), Willys Hurricane 6, a Waukesha 817, as well as a bunch of others that escape my memory.

Something about the six cyclinder just gets in your blood. Such joys to work on and a blast to drive.

Question Re: Anyone Using 4.1 Straight Six Engine?

Since we're talking about sixers...I have a 230 Inline 6 in my 65' GMC but have a 351E V6 big block I could switch from my 66' GMC 2503 parts truck. I was thinking it might be a better choice. The 65' is just a driver/beater and an eventual parts truck but everything works and I like to drive it. I thought with the V6 I could carry something or pull a trailer. The 230 is starting to leak oil, probably the rear main seal but the V6 smokes a little when I shift gears. What would you do?

The 230 would be cheaper to rebuild, But the 351 would have waaay more power. Personally I'd do the 351 for the brute low end torque.

Re: Anyone Using 4.1 Straight Six Engine?

seems to be the electric choke is cracked on the varajet, not to mention I also I'm having a problem with one of the back vacuum valves it doesn't want to shut off the the chamber to the and the valve itself it's causing a whistling sound I think it's time for a new carb what about you

Re: Anyone Using 4.1 Straight Six Engine?

I've also start this inline 6 into a 3 quarter ton 4 wheel drive call me crazy but I've just rebuilt the cab bed and full front clip the only slight modifications I've had to do this truck is power steering pump is from the 73 3 quarter ton and it's hooked up to a half ton power steering pump that sits on the front of the inline 6 so you could say this is jack of all trades. 73/80/89 Chevy and GMC
