The distributor kit mounts it to the timing cover like a old mopar since the block was not set up for one.

If a person was going to convert one of these engines over to a carb'd setup, why wouldn't you just buy a set of aluminum heads for an older engine?

Seems that by the time you gathered all the parts to do the swap for an LSx, you could have built a stout carb'd SBC with aluminum heads? All the periphery parts (headers, starters, etc.) sure seem a lot cheaper for a SBC too.
Plus the parts changing later on down the line would be simpler (not the physical part, but finding the right parts when needed).

Don't get me wrong, I love the little 4.8 in my '06 and I keep telling myself a 5.3/4l60 is in the future for my K5 2wd. But it seems if you aren't going to keep the FI you could come up with an equal SBC.

The 12* and 15* valve angles of the LS engine family and symmetrical heads make a good bit more power per cube for comparably built engines, as compared to a conventional smallblock. I've watched an L92 headed 6.2L block based 427 stroker make 630hp with a hydraulic roller cam that sounded bone stock. MSD makes a system that works great with carb'd LS engines, and you can use remote coil packs to make it look better.

I'll still take a big-inch big block, the LS stuff can't touch the torque of a 540+ big block with decent heads. Plus, in a few years, the LS stuff will be everywhere, just like the old style smallblock is now. A big block will still be more impressive under the hood of pretty much anything.

The ls has a lot of things over the older small blocks.Like the oil pan is structural oil pump is in the front of the engine like a import.The intake is dry no coolant in it so less likely to leak there.They are alum they weight less there is a big list why to use one carbed or efi.
