My grandad is just like this. He has 30-40 old cars and trucks setting around. People stopped by for years trying to buy stuff, and he was ridiculous about stuff. Eventually people just started stealing stuff - sneaking in at night. He has 3 old 67-72's setting around that I could use parts off of, but wouldn't give me anything off of them to save his life. I was looking at one of them about 15 years ago and thought I would "test" him, so I asked what he would sell me a part for. Being my grandad I thought he would say awwee if you need it just take it, but my gut said different. He spit out some crazy price and I have never asked again. Recently someone complained about the cars and they loaded a few of them up and took them to scrap (including an old 67-72 GMC). Told me a lot about the old man right there. He knew I could have used stuff off that truck. People like this are weird about their "junk".

I feel your pain, My grandpa was a Machinist, retired in 1977, I became a Machinist in 1988, Do you think he gave me his tools that he did not touch for 11 years, hell no, wouldn't even sell them to me...When he died The other parts of family scrambled and sold anything they could, I didn't even go to the sale.

there was a guy here in albuquerque that had a GREAT yard! full of old collectables and coe`s and such but that guy wanted top dollar!, Hart Rod, you probably know what guy im talking about, He actually moved his entire collection to the east mountains when he sold his property rather than sell his veh. at a decent cost, Great cars though from what I could see from the street. I would have loved to gone thru his yard.

I understand, when I'm in places like that I get sensory overload and miss things, and end up glancing at stuff instead of really checking it out, then when I leave I wonder, "Did that truck have.....?"

I hear ya. It's not like the parts I would get off those trucks would save me a lot of money, but I grew up around those trucks and thought it would be cool to drive my truck over one day and show him what I had done. Unfortunately sometimes the lessons that we learn from family are "How we don't want to be." I know I don't wanna be like that with my kids or grandkids.

That red truck w/camper is a '64, isn't it? The emblem on the front fender is the only clue I get. '65's had the emblem up on the ends of the cowl. In '66, the emblem was rectangular and back down on the fender. The '64 emblem is just like the one that is shown.

'66 was the first year for reverse lights, that's the only way I knew.

Sounds to me like he raised you right, even if he did not know he was doing it! I asked my Dad who has always been VERY Generous, why Grandpa was so selfish? He told me something that really makes sense now that I am an adult with kids, and probably grandkids in the near future. My gradfather was about 28 when the Great Deppresion hit (Some of the worst times in America, and then saw and raised kids during WWII, the olden days were pretty rough.

My grandfather also came up during the Great Depression. He was an orphan and adopted by a middle class family. I know that's why he is the way he is. Doesn't make it right though. Ok. I'll let this thread get back on topic .
