Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
We tried to get the motor running yesterday but it would either rev up after start and then quit or it would idle for a minute and quit or die if you gave it any throttle. So today I ordered all the parts (hopefully) to swap the stock carb for a Holley 500.
The PO was having the same problem and replaced the fuel pump, points and cap, drained the tank and filled it with fresh fuel and rebuilt the stock carb but it didn't help.We will probably do a compression test before doing the carb swap. Fingers crossed...

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
Accelerator pump's duff by the sound of it.
To fix it, remove the original carb, hold it in your right hand, throw into scrap pile and fit Holley 4412. Easy conversion and does wonders for your power output and gas mileage. you need to find a new air filter housing, though; I used one from a 70's Chevy. Everything you need to know on this is on the 6066 site. Some advocate the Powertronix set-up but mine runs just fine on the OEM setup.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
That's what I ordered. Got a Holley 4412s, adapter plate, air cleaner assembly, fittings, throttle return spring kit and an in line fuel filter. The wait is killin' me, I wanna drive it some before we tear it apart.

Santa came by a little early today...
Adapter plate is on backorder. I have to wait an agonizing two weeks to plop that sucker on the 305.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
Fuel leak. Don't know if it was due to glass type filter - but after I finish my run-in of my new '283' I'm going back to the polished canister type, because there was a lot of talk at the time about those things being dangerous if you're not damn sure they're tied down - to keep them from cracking against any metal parts on your engine.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
I went with this one - just below my fuel tank - outside the cab, and I'm going to take the glass one off that's in the engine compartment, shortly - to avoid this......

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
The carb is #510-0-4412S and the carb adapter is #720-1937. The throttle return spring bracket I used is #720-9678. You will also need a couple of fittings to attach the fuel lines but I will have to search for those #s. I got all my swap info from www.6066gmcguy.org. The swap was super easy. The only problems I ran into was a plastic riser under my stock carb meant I had to buy longer bolts to hold the adapter on and I had to buy 1 longer bolt for the front of the carb to hold the throttle return spring bracket on.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
I'd not do the big length of rubber hose. In the last 10 years, with different modern gas, I see my fuel hoses drying out and getting cracks within a year or two at best. I've got to where I run steel line everywhere but where absolutely necessary to run rubber hose.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
Is it necessary to flare the end of the hardline where the rubber hose attaches? I've never messed with fuel lines before but it seems like a good idea for a better seal.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
I do it. You can use any tubing flare tool to slightly enlarge the end of the tube. Not a full flare, just swell it to give the clamp some grip.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
I ordered my air ride setup today. I went with a ***************** P-51 crossmember combo kit, rear wishbone superlift kit and a complete air management kit. It's gonna be about a month before it all shows up at my door. Waiting sucks!

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
Got the carb on today but it's still doing the same thing. The glass filter doesn't stay filled with gas when we try to start it which leaves us to believe there is a problem with the fuel pump. It has an electric fuel pump on the frame under the passenger side of the seat and the stock fuel pump is bypassed. We're going to put a meter on it to see if it's geting enough juice. If it's getting 12v we will try switching the pump.
The carb swap was pretty easy except there was some sort of plastic spacer stuck to the intake manifold. It wouldn't come off easily so instead of risking damage to the manifold I just bought longer bolts and put the adapter plate on over the spacer. The choke cable wasn't quite long enough either. I'll have some pics up later tomorrow.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
We finally got it running this weekend. Replaced the cheap @$$ fuel pump with a Holley "Red" from my buddy's Datsun and ran it from a gas can and it cranked right up and ran great. When we hooked it back up to the tank it had problems getting gas. We took the sending unit out and ran a hose from the hard line into the tank and it ran again so we thought it was the sending unit. I put the sending unit back into the tank and hooked it all back up and tried it again and it ran great. So I ordered a new fuel pump from summit Racing and a new sending unit and taillight parts from Classic Parts.
I was also going to install some new parklamp lenses but they have a rivet thing to secure them to the housing and I'm not quite sure how to install them. They have a solid head with a short, narrow, hollow shaft. anyone know what I'm talking about?

What did you use to flare the backside of the rivet?

I"m thinking of changing to a slightly smaller, maybe black air cleaner.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
Finally drove it for the first time today. It drives really good for a 46 year old truck. Really wish it had power steering though. Seems like I have to turn the wheel 20 times to turn into a driveway. It's all good though 'cause she runs good now. I may try to make a custom power steering setup when we take it apart to install the new suspension and crossmembers since it will use a rack and pinion.

Re: Got My '63 GMC Today!
I decoded my VIN according to the 6066gmcguy.org site and if I'm right, my truck was the 6th 1963 GMC made (#1006). That may explain why my truck still has features of a 62 that were changed for 63, like a hydraulic clutch and clear parklight lenses. From what I've read, 63 trucks should have mechanical link clutches and amber lenses. I guess the lenses could have been changed in the 46 years its been around but I'm pretty sure the clutch/brake combo master is stock.
