Kevin... Don't loose that idea... Go for it!!.. Being a fellow Automobile addict I could never try to talk you out of it... I have been pondering this kind of build for about a year, I have even starting measuring and collecting parts.. So far I have a 67 C50 cab and nose.. A 72 Burb body shell, the back half of a truck cab, long fleetside bed, 67 stepside rear fenders and a 72 Chev 157" wheelbase dually. I too plan to use a Cummins and an Automatic for power.. Originally I started watching for an Extended cab 88-93 Dodge diesel dually 4X4.. but those are still "gold" around here and in my opinion way too expensive.. (regular cab Dodge Cummins duallys are much less) I want to stay within those years for donors because of a 6BT 12 valve engine, passenger side drop 205 transfer case, and passenger side pumpkin Dana 60 front axle.. Another factor for me was the wheelbase on the extended cab Dodge is not close enough to work without frame mods... Hence I chose to use a Chev 72 157 inch dually frame (Plus it was free) and convert it to 4X4. I am still studying and searching running gear options. So far they are: find a regluar cab Dually dodge 4X4 from 88-93. (IMHO too expensive $3500-$5000).. Buy a Dually 2WD for the engine/trans and rear axle. (found several from $1500-$2000) and use a 70's vintage Dodge 4X4 remote mounted 205 transfer case (those are cheap,$100-$200) using the remote 205 and mounting it exactly in the middle between the two axles would lessen the front driveline angle and you would end up with two identical drives lines which would be good incase of a failure, then buy either a Dodge Dana 60 or 61 front axle, it appears the 61's are less $$ and are not as popular of sellers because they are 3:07 ratio, found several for $400-$500. (The 60's only go down to 3:54 ratio, on the 61 they moved the pinion gear over to accomodate the larger pinion gear of the 3:07) Or.. find an older School bus.. some have cummins engines and "baby" Allision 6 speed AT's.. Hmmmmmmmmmm so many choices/things to consider.. Oh well for now I have enough to at least get started on the body conversion and get it mounted on a chassis.. My prelimanary measurement indicate the necessity to move the burb body forward approx 7 inches from the stock location to fit the shorter front end of the C50, then cut the burb off at the rear door post and use a stock length burb 3rd door change it to a pickup curved door window frame and add a pickup cab rear section, (I want to do a 4th door, could/would you clone your Tahoe drivers side door pillar for me?).. If all of my initial measurement are okay it looks like a longhorn bed with half of a stepside fender attached with work perfectly. Here is a picture of a C50/60 that I have posted on my shop wall that I have been staring at. (along with the photoshopped crewcab C60 posted above) |

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
Go for it!!!!!!!!! I think most, if not all around here will agree that you are the best thing to happen to these trucks since the addition of factory disc brakes!
Some thing tells me this thread is going to have a cult like following

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
If I could get it down on the ground like this then I think it would be a sure thing! I have not even looked into the chassis options on the stock trucks yet. I do think a more modern chassis would be the best start for a true road worthy long haul set up.

The idea of doing this reminded me of the 48 in Classic Trucks mag:

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
I saw that one as well but to me it does not have a tough enough look to it. The rims are just too small, I like the semi 10 lug rims and that over the road kind of look. I would love to see what the truck shop mafia would do with this idea.

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
Talk about an awesome fleet of 67-72's. This would top it off Kevin.
I even got a name for it already - "Big Boy".

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
Yep I saw is some time ago when I was searching and although he does nice work it really is not the direction I am looking for. Seems he uses Top Kick chassis for most of the trucks (or similar) and they do lot lend them selves real well to being dropped plus that definitely would spike the insurance payments. If I can stay with a 1 ton newer chassis then it would not be a problem Ins. wise. Here is a link from his site that is about as close to what I want as I could fine but still ti high. I would love to be able to end up laying out on the running board/tank cover.

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
I worked in the aftermarket parts side of things for a while... and have always speculated that these bigger trucks will be some of the best - next things... rooming and available... able to be wrapped around a myriad of cool chassis options... Go for it!

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
Just got my c50 duel cab from a wrecker in Melbourne. Sorry if I seem a bit ignorant I don’t know much about vehicles other than I know what I'm after and when I saw this I knew this was the one. If any one has any info on it that would be great. I was after a duel cab truck I like the size cabs and trays on f100's but this is the one. I have seen some of the builds here and came along this thread so here is my duel cab that I'm starting to restor. I think that I may have to extend the rear further as the tray will look out of proportion being anything less than 2.7m long.

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
Cool build PaulEB and welcome to you. You are on the best truck site there is. There are a lots of nice people on here willing to advise so ask away if you need help. The body style of truck your building will be easier to build into a big duallie type truck because the General made a dual rear wheel bed for that body style truck, and they did not for the 67-72. So so making yours a dually should now just be a matter of getting the frame to the proper lenth, and finding a bed, and making the mounts. Your gonna have a really awesome truck when done, what are your powertrain plans?
