Re: Project: 7-8-7

Paul,

It has been a few months; how goes the K5? I have keen interest in your progress as I prepare to embark on my own K5.

Thanks,
Mal

Re: Project: 7-8-7

Oh no you brought me back from the dead!

With the holidays, the abnormaly cold winter and OT at work I havent been able to touch it. I'm hoping to get a storage building soon to make some more space in the garage and get it moved in there then.

Are you going to be swapping to 2wd too?

It's crazy huh? I'm originally from Tidewater Virginia area. My mom is loving it though, making ice cream out of the snow.

Yeah I will be doing the swap. I was watching your progress because your photos are a little more detailed. I'm currently pulling the 305 for a 350. Too bad you aren't in Vegas, you could work on your truck nearly year round.

I look forward to your renewed efforts.

Mal

Re: Project: 7-8-7

I got a '76 front clip for it today. Just need a hood and wiper linkage to complete that swap. Other than that, nothing. To busy at work (50+ hr every week), and getting ready for a newborn, that will be here in the next few days. I got my building this week and it has rained everyday since wedensday so I havent been able to start moving stuff over to it.

I will try and get pics of the new tins tomorrow, they are in really nice shape...

I got the headlight bezels and turn signals too. I had to take them off to seperate everything so it would fit in my truck. I really need a trailer..

Re: Project: 7-8-7

No, not really. My third child was born in march, I have been working 50+ hrs a week all year. Had to sell my 07 gmc due to medical bills from said child and then purchased a 97 firebird and put a new engine in it to DD. So what spare time I have had this year, has been spent on sick kids, the firebird or mainteance on everything else.

Things are supposed to be slowing down by april, hopefully I will have some time for it then. I have thought about selling it, but its not costing anything but some space in the driveway so.....

I do see some stuff I havent posted, it was all parts gathering so I didnt want to bring the thread back up for that. I sold the 87 front clip. I have all the wiper parts and a hood to complete the '76 front end swap. I also scored a set of '02 tahoe 3rd row seats for the rear so all the seats will match. I also helped a friend install a new 500 hp 400 into his '69 camaro and got the 355 shortblock from it for the K5. It needs new bearings/rings but should be good to go. I will probably get a set of vortec heads from the pick and pull for it. I also got a set of manual trans pedals since the NV3500 I have for my '78 will probably wind up in this.....

Re: Project: 7-8-7

So at the risk of bumping my old stinky thread, I have a significant update. As the above post mentioned I worked a ton of OT last year and had my third child. It was a busy year, but things are slowing down now.

I have been checking craiglist and stuff for parts and deals and picking up small things here and there for this project. This weekend I picked up a pretty decent 81 dash bezel. For those that dont know, the 81 and 82 trucks used the newer style dash pad, but still had the wipers on the dash instead of the column. I plan on putting the dimmer in the floor and the wiper switch in the dash of this truck to keep it in line with the 76 model year clip. I also grabbed the center and outer grill brackets off a '73 truck, so I might put that style grill in it as well, its not like I'm going factory correct with it anways...

The biggest advancement with this project is this, about two months ago I saw an add on craiglsit for K5 parts. Buried in the description was a bare 2wd '78 (I think) model frame. I called the guy and set up an appt to see it that weekend. That week my heat pump went out, got it fixed and canceled the appt to see the frame. Told him I would call back when I had the cash. That weekend it went out again and took my aux heat with it, so I had no heat for a week since parts had to be ordered. All total it cost me $250 to fix it since the parts were under warrenty.

So fast forward to today, last week we got a bonus at work so I called the guy up and he still had the frame. Went and checked it out and left a deposit, he delievered it for me sunday.....

Sorry for the long winded post, but this should get me back motivated on this project since now I dont have to worry about locating the front end correctly. I have some maintenance to do on my '78 truck, but I should start cleaning and painting this soon. I have all new front end parts and bushings for it already, just need to buy some paint. I'm thinking POR 15 with some Eastwood chassis paint as a top coat?

Guess this just turned into a frame off!!!!
