Re: how rare are long bed step sides?
I finally got out to look at the K20 long stepside in person yesterday.
That thing was hammered and really rusty. Not a panel on it was salvageable. You would need a tetanus shot just to drive it. It had to have come from the coast. The engine knocked bad on startup and it was only a T-350. He would have to pay me to take it away. I'm going to look at a 74 cab / doghouse and rolling chassis project truck this weekend to use for building up another truck instead. No drivetrain or bed. Hopefully the cab is not too rusty.

Re: how rare are long bed step sides?
FWIW, in all my years of owning a 67-72 long step, I've only seen 1 or possibly 2 73-87 long steppers in Texas and the deep South area. So in our neck of the woods they are rare. I do see 2WD Blazers regularly.

Re: how rare are long bed step sides?
If this one wasn't in such poor shape I would have bought it. This one was a complete basket case with nothing worth salvaging and he still wanted $600 for it.

Re: how rare are long bed step sides?
I've watched a 70 C20 long bed stepper sit for several years with no response when I placed a note on it asking dibs if it ever comes up for sale. I think it's time to knock on the door. I'd like to get it since it's fairly rust free with a six and column 3-speed. Lots of potential.

Re: how rare are long bed step sides?
I have one I bought in Oklahoma. Originally a diesel, It has a 1972 400, Turbo 400 and dual tanks, Heavy half, and hydramatic brakes. Very rust free, except the outer rockers. I picked it up for $1000 and drove it to NH. The cab is being used to restore another truck. The bed is going on a matching trailer made from a 1973 pickup. I like that the truck is so different.

Re: how rare are long bed step sides?
I do a lot of camping, and this set up would be perfect to pull my pop up and have all that extra storage on the bedsides.

Re: how rare are long bed step sides?
My great uncle had one. I don't know what year it was, but it was a Big10. It was garaged it's whole life. He passed several years back and my Great aunt just gave it to my uncle about 6 months ago. I didn't have the space to keep it and my uncle has a few buildings where he could store it in. Paints not in great shape, but not too bad. After I finish my 86, I'd like to get it and clean it up and get it back on the road.

Re: how rare are long bed step sides?
An area gas pipeline company used long narrow bed 3/4 tons for years around here. Must have had forty or fifty and worked them hard on unimproved roads. Haven't seen any in the last twenty years. Don't know why they would choose that body style unless it was the wood floor would hold up better for hauling barrels and other heavy items and long beds for more room.

Re: how rare are long bed step sides?
I have the correct information. The factory in Canada makes this kind to the Middle East only. And trucks of this type does not exist only a few of them in America. The reason is due to an incident, a teenager smokes got in the truck driven by combustion. His mother filed a lawsuit and won by . Has been working on the design now exists

Re: how rare are long bed step sides?
I was randomly trying to google an old truck like mine and I found this thread, so I'm reviving it from the dead! For my 15th birthday (in 2002) I got my first vehicle: a 1971 Chevy longbed stepside K10. It came from the Cleveland are and took it down to Columbus, Ohio.
The thing was a beast! My dad got it for me largely because he thought we needed a truck in the family, but we didn't know a lot about working on cars, and it wasn't totally dependable, so we ended up selling it after 3 years or so. I have since become a little more knowledgeable about cars and I always wish I had kept it and done a little more restoration on it. I'll try to find some pics and post 'em up, but I never really didn't take many. |
