FNG 72 K5 CST Project

Changed out all the rubber fuel lines tonight. Blew everything out and the main line still had gas in it! Now can anyone tell me what this is? An old fuel filter?


It was next to the battery tray.

Maybe in Cali but not in Tri cities, My guess it was probably origionally sold to a dealer in cali?? Or origionally shippped to a dealer in cali then trucked up here to be sold.

Has anyone else installed an Edelbrock 2696 Q jet adapter? Do these double sided bolts need to be screwed in all the way? I see material starting to get pressed out.

Does anybody have any tips? This is a completely stock intake and there are a lot of little things that don't lines up and if anyone has done this feel free to chime in.

I had to replace the stock throttle linkage holder with one from an auto parts store when i put an elelbrock carb and manafold on my truck.

You could specify what "little things" tho so someone could better assist you.

Thanks, I will when I get home from work. The problem is I don't know what anything is called, so I'll have to use pictures. Hence FNG in the title. Thanks again though.

w00t to another original owner! Mine was special ordered in 71 by my Dad. Given to me in HS in the mid 90's. Drove until college, then sat in the back of the barn from 97 to Turkey Day 2010.

I cant believe they had charcoal canisters that long ago, too funny.

Same thing just dif angle the rod comes out of it

In the first pic, Under the metal housing, thats a Bi-metalic choke spring attached to the rod, you don't need it on your edelbrock as its an electric choke model carb, so you can remove it from the intake manifold althgether. When you pull it out you'll see its a thin sheet metal coil spring , its temprature sensative and expands and contracts with temoptature changes, the other end hooked to your choke linkage on the rochester.

The last pic: Yes thats the throttle cable and mount bracket, that is the bracket i had to replace with an aftermarket one, but i used an edelbrock intake manafold so i don't know for sure about your install but the spacing for and aft is probably different with the new carb. On the end of the cable you see the little nut shaft and ball, that ball is inside the end of the cable, you can pull the ball out and then attach it to the throttle linkage on the carb first, then attach the cable to it again and you can see how far the bolt hole on the bracket is from one of the manafold bolts, if it does not line up well you will have to buy an aftermarket one.

One thought? Shouldn't there be a thicker gasket between the bottom of the carb & plate? Seames to me I had a 1/2"er in there back in my carb days??

I haven't had a chance to run her due to lack of $$. But the gaskets I put on came with the kit. Have to see if there's any issues later I guess.

She's been collecting dust and I've been makin babies! Literally I now have three kiddos running around and am getting ready to move. What better time to get back to work! Well I just ordered a poly tank from Wes at Classic Heartbeat and am looking to get back to work on this beast.

Ok.... How do I take off the fan shroud... I am considering cutting this pos in half with a sawzal...

There are 2 bolts 1 on either side of the fan shroud that bolt the shroud on. Remove those and then just pull it out from the bottom. Only thing is you might have to unbolt the fan to get the whole rest of the shroud out.

Its not a pos and its important for cooling the engine.

Take a 9/16 ratchet and wrench and loosen the lower mounting bolt of the alternator, then loosen the top bolt, its 1/2", take the fan belt off the water pump pulley. There are 2 3/8's bolts on top of both sides of the shroud, Then take the 2 bolts out, then tip the shroud toward the engine while lifting the upper radiator hose if its in the way to access the front of the fan, get a 7/16 socket and ratchet and loosen the fan bolts and remove the fan, if the water pump pulley is loose then pull it off now too so it don't drop on to the floor., now lift out the shroud, it will be resting in a couple of clips on the bottom of the radiator support, make a note of there location because they tend to pull off the frame

Ah shiate I know I just got frustrated. Thanks for the walkthrough, I will hit that tomorrow. I gave up being to many beers deep and having to get up early. I did managed to hook up the power steering and get a fuel line hooked up with a filter. Got some plugs in her and am getting a on exhaust kit tomorrow in the mail... Just waiting on a poly tank from classic heartbeat that I ordered last week, not even an email... Wtf...
