Re: COPO Truck?
Man this thread made me think of the trucks I saw back when I was looking for my first one. Many times the seller would say "yeah, its got the Corvette 327 in it" I saw one that was a piece, a 68 50th with a lime green step bed and a 327 that he wanted a fortune for because it "has a 'vette motor" in it

Re: COPO Truck?
In '72, Chevrolet could not even sell 1/2-ton Big-Block trucks in California due to emission standards. Rumors/tales of high-performance factory engines being installed in trucks during production are preposterous. The factory simply would not do that (at least in '72). A dealer or special builder (like Yenko or Nickey) could have ordered and installed a different engine for a customer, but not the factory. Didn't Happen!

Re: COPO Truck?
yes, I had thought the same. I am told this truck had been sitting since the mid 70's, and its engine was robbed for a muscle car. Although I have a harder time believing the emblem is original than the engine, I also have a difficult time believing someone would have put the effort into not only swapping a 427 into a 69 long bed truck, but that they would also source and install the emblems. All on a truck not desirable at the time, and only a few years old. IDK. then theirs always the possibility that the story is not accurate lol

Re: COPO Truck?
One of my younger brothers pulled the 6 cylinder out of his '64 Nova wagon and put in a 327 with something like 11:1 compression, backed up with a 400 THM and narrowed Ford 9" axle. This was back in the '70s when you could buy fuel for that sort of thing. He put the 327 flags on the fenders and SS emblems all in the correct places. So some people would bother.

Re: COPO Truck?
Yep. I put Corvette emblems on the side of my Jeep that had a 327 in it. Very easy to do

Re: COPO Truck?
There used to be a 1970 C10 with 427 numbers on th ehood parked outside of the horse barn where I used to train my horse when we were showing AQHA way back when. I asked the owner of the barn about it one day and he gave me the run down on it. It literally had a 427 and 4 speed from a 67 Stingray that one of his sons wrecked in the 70s. I guess the youngest son bought the Vette from the older brother and then put the power train in his truck. It had turbines on it too. I used to swing by and try to get them to sell it but it never worked. Last time I drove by the truck was gone so hopefully they are getting it running and driving again.

Re: COPO Truck?
So I got this truck awhile back and didn’t understand the copo on the vin tag.
I asked around and no one new much I looked it up on the board and wouldn’t you know an old thread about copo. Doesn’t have a spid or 427 but never seen copo on a truck vin before. Here’s a pic of the vin..... Last edited by Rods; 02-15-2019 at 11:13 PM. |

Re: COPO Truck?
What's on the SPID? Anything special, like paint?
Other options of COPO vehicles were Police and Taxi Cab. They had a conduit running front to rear to shield the radio equipment. That was in the '60s. I don't know how it is done now. Maybe one of the retrofits after delivery. I know that the extra door armor on Police units doesn't get put on during a trip down the assembly line.

Re: COPO Truck?
So a few years back I purchased 2 1972 shortwides from California. One had special bright yellow paint and no options. A friend said it was 1972 corvette yellow. No pic of Spid. It was a State of California truck either spid said that or vin tag I don't remember. I sold it. The other I kept. It is orange and white and was loaded. The 402 ended up being a 1970 CGS code 345 hp police 454. Has a factory carb heat shield and deep oil pan. The spid or vin tag on the orange one says nothing about a State truck or copo or anything special. Just 400 v8. The one in my avatar pic is a different one that I sold.
