Thats the best thing about a diesel, with the push of a button I can go from 525hp 911ftlbs to 615hp 1060ftlbs to 702hp 1200ftlbs to 768hp 1305ftlbs. The truck runs and drives great on all the tunes but I dont drive on the street with the 702hp or the 768hp tunes because I cant get traction. on the 768 tune I can be going down the road at 60mph and go to WOT and the tires just go up in smoke. Its cool but scares the hell out of me everytime I do it. On the 525 tune I get 22mpg around town. I have never taken it on the highway to see what it would get.

Yep, I knew the tuning range was broad on these. Not too mant guys would frown @ 525hp & 911ft/lbs w/+20mpgs. Sure wish these swaps were easier....

Maybe I could get someone to sit in the bed when I do it, to get the video. Any takers?

I bought the bus that the engine, trans, radiator, intercooler, steering wheel and wiring harness came out of for $8000. I have about $5000 into other parts that were needed, and the rest is a lot of fab work. My time is free. All the performance parts are not added to this $ amount.

I love this idea of building this era truck but I wanna go for reliability and durability basically meaning that my frame will fall apart before the powertrain does over 50 years or so would you say this is a stupid idea to build a d-max daily driver c/10? thats the only reason I'd go for it maybe a bit of added horsepower but I love the idea of that older truck newer powertrain underneath. P.s. have you done any highway miles to estimate your mileage there?

If you check out post #26 it says what the engine makes for power and the mpg in town. I have not taken the truck on a long enough highway trip to tell the mpg. This would be a great engine trans combo for a daily driver. If you were going to do it you may want to get a 06 or newer because the transmission will be a 6 speed. I run a custom GM 14 bolt with 3.21 gears.

Re: Dyno'ed 768hp 1305ftlbs & ran a 10.99@122

Yeah I've also looked at the Suburban D-max as well as a stock looking one by PPE on this site and Im impressed with all the builds hands down there isnt a better looking truck to put these powertrains into and we certainly have the room for it my only concern after putting all that in would be 1. the ride around town (im sure air ride would fix that) 2. Did you do anything for A/C or is it a pure 2 windows down at 60? 3. You used the stock frame correct and just boxed it and made a new crossmember for the front?

1: Air ride will take care of the ride.
2: I have Vintage Air in the truck with the factory D-Max a/c compressor, and it blows ice cold.
3: Frame is stock but I boxed the front half up to the transmission crossmember. I used the factory front crossmember but had to cut alot of it out and box it in.

Wow that is some really impressive fab work just a ton of fitting hours I'm sure and I like the bags inside the Springs thats a good concealed look and not just relying on the bags (in case of a blowout) and I'm glad my vintage air would work with it as well I was concerned with how much the engine and tranny went into the cab and what would fit behind the dash after the build. Im glad to see you kept it five lug as well keeping the look of the classic.

Frame is done, cab and bed are on and the truck is at the chassis guy getting the cage welded in. When I get the truck back I need to install the eng and trans and run all the fuel lines and wires.
I have a dyno tune set up for June 6 and after the dyno were going to the track for some test and tune.

Re: Dyno'ed 768hp 1305ftlbs & ran a 10.99@122

I got the cage in it and dyno tuned the new engine. It made 1000hp and 1525tq. spinning the tires on the dyno.

Took it to the track after the dyno and the torque converter blew up at the line. It locked the converter right off the line, and I ran a 9.95@141. This was on the small race tune that dyno'ed 925HP.

I got the truck back to my shop and installed a new converter and cleaned the trans out. I didn't have any time to rebuild the trans at that time because I have to be at a race in 3 days. I went to the race and ran a 9.91@143 but the clutches burnt up in the trans. This run was also on the small race tune.

I took the trans out and rebuilt it with all new clutches and hard parts that were worn. Installed a new torque converter and went to a race in MN. I didn't even get a good pass out of it and the torque converter blew up again and took the clutches out in the trans.

I sent the trans out to Inglewood and Mike went through the trans and installed all new clutches and did some other stuff in the trans. I got a new TC from a different company and I have not been back to the track.

I found a Mark Williams 11" rearend on racing junk that had the gear ratio I wanted in it 2.91. So now I'm in the process of installing this huge rearend in my truck. I'm not sure if any of you have seen this rearend but it is heavy duty. I'm installing a 4-link rear suspension in it with a wish bone and anti roll bar. I don't get into suspension much so this has been taking me a long time to make sure I have everything right before I weld it in. Lots of measuring and weighing of the truck. I will get some pictures up when I'm done.
