Re: Straight axle steering
Thanks, that's a great writeup and I've also watched on Orrrie's build thread of how he did this setup. Orrie has his own unique ways of making things work! I suppose the saginaw is a proven way for good power steering. I think when one's in the market, just need to weigh out all the choices and make the best choice for their needs. I'm torn between the 3 of these darned things! lol I'd like to see what mgbmike has to say about installing a crown vic front end, and that will probably make one of these 3 powersteering choices look very good! ; )

Re: Straight axle steering
I'm using the Saginaw setup from CPP on my 57. I like it so far but it will limit your wheel and tire options. I have eight inch Corvette wheels with four inch back spacing and 235/75/15 tires. They don't rub but come within a quarter inch from touching the box when I turn completely to the right. I don't think I could run a larger tire.

Re: Straight axle steering
Yeah I didn't think very much about it before posting. It would not work well at all. I am interested now on how well this setup works

Re: Straight axle steering
This is the main reason that I went with the mid 70s camaro firebird clip.also gives me lots of clearance for my big pontiac motors.also there is tons of after market parts for them!

Re: Straight axle steering
There is some interesting/positive feedback on the No Limit straight axle R&P kit on the Ford pickup forums (if you can stoop so low). Search: No Limit Rack & Pinion Kit-Report
I like it because it gets rid of all the old bs, arms, rods etc. It's compact and the steering shaft comes up in a perfect location, clear for exhaust. I have mono-leafs & disc brake kit. I have replaced wheel bearing and kingpins also. It might not be the best option and I am not trying to sell it but it is interesting to me, I hope it works. |
