Re: 1965 Fastback GT

The starter works. I installed the plugs and hooked up a fuel can to the pump and the pump works. Then I tightened the fuel line at the carb and attempted to start it. I was by myself and attempted 3 times. It didn't hit. Got out and looked at the carb and there was fuel all over the carb and intake. I'm guessing the float is stuck and it was coming out of the over flow. I thought about jumping the solenoid so I could watch it, but the fumes were too strong. I really didn't want a spark.

It looks like the top plate will come off the carb. I will do it on the bench so i don't drop anything. That will be my next step to see what the inside looks like.

I figured it would be worse.

Installed the carb and turned it over to get fuel to the carb. Well, I've rebuilt several carbs and never had this happen. Evidently the float is not shutting the fuel off. I set the float level by the book 19/64 to the top of the float from the top of the carb body. I guess i will take the top plate off and see what's going on. the fuel is coming from the hole my screwdriver is pointing to. I was spinning it over by jumping the solenoid and stopped right when the fuel was coming out. The fuel was also coming over of the primary sqruiters. The accelertor pump doesn't seem to be working either. When I move the linkage it doesn't sqruit.

Edit: Ooopps, I have a spring wrong on the float. Looks good now. Checked for spark on the old points system. No fire at the plugs. I popped the cap off and broke the points (they were closed) and no spark. I bypassed the contact pad and got a spark. What do you think? Bad points, coil, condensor or all the above?

I cleaned the points and it runs. I didn't let it run but for 10 seconds. Need to check for leaks.

No leaks, let it almost get warm. Tried to adjust the idle screw for the rpm and the screw broke off. Even with PB blaster. Never got the rpm adjusted.

I have no issue with any type of American Muscle. That stang is on my favorites list. When I was a kid a customer on my paper route had a white one with blue stripes. I drooled every day when I saw it.

Onwards and upwards. Got the fuel tank out and I suggest a new one including sending unit and all lines.

MAn , nice car . My first car was a 69' coupe with 302 3 speed stick . Those small Ford motors run good . They are great motors . That car will clean up nicely .

Re: 1965 Fastback GT

i would go ahead and replace all of the ignition components. even if it had been on the road for the past 15 years instead of in a shed they would need to be replaced.

looks like you might have a small exhaust leak too beautiful car. the body and interior look pretty cherry. it's gonna be a great cruiser when you get her running!

Re: 1965 Fastback GT

Stumbled upon this thread today. Wow looks like a fun project to get running.

As sillyoldman says I love any old classic car or truck, the early Fastback Mustangs are certainly one of my favorites....as I have a 66 GT Fastback in the garage along side my Chevy pickup. Its restored to a driver quality, the only way I roll.

Alan, your doing all the right things, I'm sure the owner will have you proceed forward, with your input as you go along.

As a small input when you reinstall the gas tank, I would replace the rubber tube connecting the tank to the filler neck. Its 2 ply and with age and inactivity, the inner ply flakes away and enters the fuel system after all the work you have done. Ask me how I know! Its a $4 part.

Thanks for you inputs well. I plan on replacing everything on the fuel system including all rubber lines. I sent him what the cost will be, just waiting on word and cash so I can order everything.

Re: 1965 Fastback GT

It's been a while, but got back on it tonight. I was able to get it on the lift this past weekend. I ordered the parts a month ago, but wanted to get my 65 C10 running.

Tonight I was able to change the main line and the pump to carb line. I was very pleased with the lines. They just needed some minor tweaking.

Thanks and the owner is aware about the wheels. He said they came off a Torino. I don't know, just repeating what he said.

It's a solid car with no holes in the pans.

Thanks guys!!

Now is there a simple way to free up the clutch. I guess it's rusted to the flywheel. I've tried bumping the starter to break it loose. That hasn't worked yet. There isn't any access point to get any kind of tool in there to free it up. Advice appreciated. Trying not pull the tranny yet, but it looks like the only way.

Re: 1965 Fastback GT

In the same time you will try to free it up, you can just pull the tranny & bell housing. You should inspect the clutch, and flywheel any way. Just hope the spline isn't rusted too.
Sometimes when you try to save the customer money your hurting yourself, and might get a come back on top of that.
