'68 C/30 stepside

That's the first dual wheel tandem I've seen. I have seen a tandem mid-70s Chevy back in the early '80s. I really liked the way it was done. Looked factory. It was a factory green (deeper than Medium Olive Poly) with a 12' bed,and all 6 wheels were chrome spokes. The rear wheel openings were done just right.

Back to dual wheel Stepsides...I always had a dreamed up truck idea I wanted to do. It was actually on an Advance Design I first was inspired,but would work on any Stepside. It would actually look better on a '60 or newer truck with the wide cab. My version was to widen the bed,leave the fenders alone,tub the inside. Might as well gain more bed to go along with the purpose of dual wheels...adding load capacity. And,I think widening the head panel and tailgate would be easier than widening fenders. At least for me it would.

Hot Rod featured a truck in about '78 you would have just loved. It was a short fleet with huge (for thr time) rear tires. They took the Fleetside bed and narrowed it like 8" then grafted on a set of stepside fenders. So it looked like these new dually conversions but was not much wider than stock.

correct me if I'm wrong but didn't GM make a dual rearend that was narrower and was the sme width as a normal single wheel? so all you would have to do is tub out the box?

Note quite, The chassis cab DRW axle is narrower than a SRW but not enough to completely tuck under the stock fleetside. Due to an ordering restriction I believe the stepside is even narrower. !0.00x16.5" tires were not available on stepsides per the data book.

I probably saw that short dually back then. People did a whole lot of imaginative things back in the day before there were any set trends to follow. I remember a black shortbed square body Stepside w/green & yellow graphics,lowered,van-style drop down visor (like on my tow truck) wide wheels and tires all around,probably a chin spoiler/air dam up front,and I guess it had a 5.7 diesel. It had fat exhaust out the rear and I just remember a shot from behind with black smoke belching out the pipes. That was my first inspiration on a hot rod diesel truck...about 35 years ago. I spec'd out a Hawaiian Blue '82 C/30 Dooley I wanted to order and never did. Then,it was a K/30 drw diesel cab & chassis utility bed. I never got either but a couple friends got one,a '77 Silverado K/30 and an '80 Custom Deluxe K/30 cab & chassis flatbed with custom-built tool boxes and ladder rack. Eric's '77 we went to a machine shop ($400) and had wider spacers and longer studs made to fit 9.00-16 Power Kings. On Dave's '80 we figured out there were stock parts off larger trucks we could use that cost about $75 and ran the 9.00-16s.

Been there done that. This is from ~'78. K30 3+3 SRW, 6X6, sleeper, rag topper, 36" tires, push bumper and a CB, :-)

No I hadn't seen these, thanks. There was a Dodge crewcab on a 6X6 chassis with tractor tires. I saw pictures of it a while back. This is really great though.
