Nice project! I'm just down the road from you in Seabrook. It's nice to see someone close by with a square body project.

Re: Whoa ohhh Black Betty!

It's an 87' stepside 4x4. I have a build thread going if you want to check it out. It's actually at a buddy of mines place at the moment where I have more room to work on it. He is building an 88' crew cab at the same time so we have been helping each other out. We have gotten carried away with buying parts vehicles to feed our projects. I have lots of 88' to 91' Suburban parts so if you find yourself in need of something let me know and maybe I can help you out.

Re: Whoa ohhh Black Betty!

If I've got enough free time this weekend, I'm going to start getting ready to pull the cab off this beast. My plan is to try and find long enough eyelets to tap into the ceiling joists in my garage at 4 locations. Then I'll run ratchet straps through the cab and hook onto eyelet points ratcheting & floor jacking for support. If anything goes wrong (ceiling caves in or house come crashing down) I'll blame it on that nasty LS fever sweeping the nation!

I just wonder how I'm going to lower it once it's far enough up for the frame to roll out...

Re: Whoa ohhh Black Betty!

Well, it's windstorm rated to 120mph, and w/ all 4 doors off and no interior at all, what could it weigh? I won't even guess.

Re: Whoa ohhh Black Betty!

Now I'm dying to know if anyone could tell me the dry weight of a crew cab. It's got no interior pieces at all, just bare from firewall-backwall, floor-ceiling. I'm also taking off the doors. I want to build a sturdy "dolly" to set the cab on when I pull it off the frame. I'd like to do this out of 2x4's. Braced all the way around, and basically like a good set of heavy duty shop sawhorses.

Re: Whoa ohhh Black Betty!

Been awhile since I had a chance to update. While I haven't been too busy, I have made some progress. I'll put up some pics soon, but to date, I've gotten the frame stripped, media blasted, and currently in primer. Eastwood Chassis Black (satin) will soon grace every curve, crevice, and bend in that 18' long behemoth! As of today, I placed my order for a Ride Tech C-10 Level 1 air management system! It was more $$$ than I had intended to spend for air ride, but buying the best was worth it to me. Next on the to do list would be finish frame, order tubular upper and lower CA's, yank motor/trans from donor, install suspension components, and watch my dollars fly out of my bank account!

Oh... almost forgot... I had to buy a parts hauler, as my GS300 wasn't cut out for heavy duty. Or any duty for that matter! I swung a deal on a 2005 Sierra SLE CCSB w/ only 36K miles on it for $16K!!! Now I currently own 3 GMC's and 1 Chevy!

Re: Black Betty! **NEW PIC ADDED***

It was difficult to not fully observe the contents' initial instruction, but I couldn't let all that heavy metal go without skin to skin contact! It's no wonder their company name creates ART as an acronymn!

LOL! Looks like a little reverse psycology. Opening that envelope is almost manditory now.

Re: Whoa ohhh Black Betty!

the donor gave up it's LQ4/4l80e last weekend... thought I posted it... however, it didn't happen without a fight, as I wrestled with that darn thing all day long. I'll be getting her tore down soon.

Re: Whoa ohhh Black Betty!

Still slow to come, so I apologize in advance for the dullness of this build... good things come to those who wait I'm told, so I'll pass that anecdote on to my fellow square body allies. All the suspension from ride tech is paid for, and awaiting the final pieces now. Bad news is I had a set back w/ the frame. It's currently at my parent's property for space purposes, but in NE Houston where they live, their community was recently covered by 3' of water from hard continuous rains a few weeks ago. My frame was under water for several days and began to develop some slight rusting. My plan is to go ahead and re-blast it, as I wasn't happy with initial results anyway. I'll make some adjustments to it of the spring perch removal type, then finish it totally. I will then tackle the air ride. By then I'll have enough funds to get the 6L torn down and rebuilt. Then make preparations to get that monster stabbed in it's final resting place.

I have also gone against my first plan on paint scheme, and think I have decided to do a 2 tone blue/white combo that will give it a classic flair. I'm thinking indigo blue top/bottom sections w/ Cadillac diamond white belt line outta look mighty fine and be a little easier on the wallet than the first plan! It'll still get a shaved treatment to keep it custom at the same time.
