air bags are your best bet, you can run the hose to behind the license plate for your shrader valves so you can adjust as needed, bags will get you a better ride too.

Or you can static drop, thats what I did, 2"/4" and I tow a small trailer from time to time. I have also towed a 18' trailer without any issues but it wasnt loaded.

I'm not sure if you'd be able to find a heavy duty lowering spring. You could go with lowering blocks and keep your stock springs, that could get you 1-3 inches.

Or get lowering springs and use these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/AIR-60789/
I know you said you don't want to mess with airbags, but these go inside your springs and air up with a regular air valve that you mount somewhere. Air them up if you need the extra lift when towing, deflate them when you don't.

Two viable and cost effective options for you.
