Re: Interesting Truck

We have a lot of them go by on rail where I work at a propane outlet, the trains deliver gas to us 2-3 cars a week but the trucks are always going by to do track repairs, pretty cool. A buddy of mine bought an Explorer from them but they kept the track steel wheels.

Re: Interesting Truck

Well I don't think they actually repair much here either, they go by often and a train fell off the tracks 2 times in 3 years right close by sooo prob not repairing enough.

Re: Interesting Truck

I worked for a class 1 railroad company for a short time and I am very surprised to see this truck for sale. Normally the company would take the equipment off of the truck before getting rid of it due to the chance of someone putting it on the tracks in a non signal territory. If the truck was put on a track in a signaled territory the signal system would immediately communicate to a dispatching office (sometimes hundreds of miles away) that there is something on the tracks. All trains in that area or on that track would either stop or slow down to the point where they could stop within half the distance of sight, but if the train is running in non signaled territory there is nothing telling the engineer that there is something on the tracks.

The weight ratio of a fully loaded freight train to a truck like that is proportional to the weight of a beer can to a car.

If Union Pacific catches wind of the auction I am 100% positive they would contact the owner and cancel the auction. Being that the truck can be tied back to their railroad, there is a possibility they could be held accountable for getting rid of something like that without taking the equipment off.

The high rail trucks are used by the maintenance of way crews which as others have said, do maintenance on the track. They ride on the rails and inspect the rails for cracks, breaks, or wear out points. Also, they could be used to get the crew to remote areas where there are no roads. Sometimes they are outfitted with equipment that will “xray” the track as the truck goes over it. The data is analyzed later and an assessment of the tracks condition can be found that way.

There is usually something to hold the steering wheel straight, and the rails steer the truck. Hypothetically speaking, the truck could go as fast on the rails as it would on the street, but railroad operating rules prevent the trucks from going over either 35-45 mph, even on straight shots.

I figured there would be some kind of regulations against that. Thanks for the inside info very cool.

Wow these are just too cool, I would love to have or build one but the thought of racing down a rail and find a train head on with me kinda stops that idea hahaha

Yep, that's exactly what I figured, and also why I've never seen one forsale to the public with equipment intact. That's why I was shocked to see it on ebay.
