Re: Burb Roof Rack-DIY

Thanks guys, I have to admit it did come out much better than I thought it would.

I added a pic with my vintage "western auto" cooler, don't have any vintage luggage yet. I do have an idea I'll mock up and show you guys for awning/sun-shade. Something simple that would extend off the rack over the side so you would never be without shade at a show.

Also as pirate requested I added some pic's of the mounting points.
-The cross car beam to drip rail mount uses a carriage bolt.
-The slats use a screw into a wood flange nut in the bottom of the cross car beam.
-All the hardware is stainless.

Love the roof rack and love the truck. I think you parked across from me at good guys in indy last year. We were in the trick truck area next to those blasted indy cars.

Super clean, nicely done. Your rabbets are so clean, I can't tell what is notched.. the slats or the cross rails?

Re: Burb Roof Rack-DIY

Man you paid attention in woodworking class. I'm a old vw guy and the single cab trucks had them available . Wouldn't mind trying one for my truck. You nailed it the first time out. I'm sure you will be taking orders.

Sorry, I should have added it to my original post. The roof clamps are "Quick-and-Easy" brand made by a company called Quick and Easy products I believe. I bought mine online, $70 for the set of 4 from NRS (www.nrsweb.com). They sell outdoor gear/stuff (I have no affiliation with them BTW) but if you search the web there are other vendors who sell them. I don't think they are rare pieces but it took a while to find them, the hard part is what term to search for, roof rack mount, roof clamp, roof rack foot?? You get the idea. You mostly get industrial racks and Yakima stuff for results.

The clamps are nice pieces, cast aluminum, hardware is rubber coated where it clamps to the drip rail. You guys are correct the mechanism is a simple rotating cam lock you can adjust. I had been playing with my own clamp design but this was way easier.

I've tested some different color stains but I'm leaning towards a natural color, it seems to go well with the truck color. Also bought some spar urethane in a satin finish to protect the wood from UV and water.

The rail parts should be here first of the week so I will post some pic's as soon as I get them.

Thanks- Dave
found some brackets on craigslist just like yours, gonna give it try for my truck similar to the vw single cabs. i'll see how it comes out. if not they will be up for sale.

Re: Burb Roof Rack-DIY

The clamps were the key, I briefly considered making my own but once I found these quickly dropped that idea. I didn't have much luck finding a factory original plus I liked the idea of no holes in the roof. I figured if the rack came out not so good I could just take it back off, no harm done. Like every project the next time I'll do some things different. Still have an idea for sunshade/awning I want to show you guys. -Dave

Re: Burb Roof Rack-DIY

Saw my old thread referenced and thought I'd chime in. Never did get the sunshade finished, actually ended up selling the Burb this summer. Roof rack was still on it and holding up well a year latter. -Dave
