Re: rear axle locking up and popping
I wonder how many blew them up adding the additives designed for use in limited slip differentials

Re: rear axle locking up and popping
You know, i had 2 of these Gov-locs blow up on me in the past. The first one just came apart under normal driving. It actually dropped out the cross shaft and ruined the carrier and side gears. The second one was an actual differential explosion with only 33"s on it but I was beating on it pretty hard when it came apart so it is my own doing. I had blown the spiders clean out of it, the weights were totally gone and I had snapped the pinion gear when the carrier locked everything up and blew some teeth off the ring gear in the process. I also managed to snap an axle and had it jammed in the case. When I took off the rear diff cover all the parts came out of it and the diff popped out without tools!

Re: rear axle locking up and popping
the last differential i replaced was a non g80. the previous owner had rebuilt it incorrectly and it ate the spider gear bushings, destroying just about everything else inside. bottom line is the g80s are not known for their strength under extreme circumstances but neither are the standard open diffs. if you are looking for higher strength on a corp 10 bolt you will have to go aftermarket. if you are looking for daily driver strength the g80s will do just as well as the open diffs.

Re: rear axle locking up and popping
They're not total crap. As long as you don't abuse it, it'll hold up fine. Don't spin the tires unnecessarily, street OR dirt. Keep what you have and if it ever blows you can upgrade to a Lok-rite. They are inexpensive, stout, and supposedly easy to install.

Re: rear axle locking up and popping
Ya, they are a little pricey. I have owned several of them ( many in 4x4's both axles), still have 3. The best thing about them is you never know it's there, until you abuse the skinny pedal A Lockright, or Detriot will constantly remind you that it is there. Pop, crunch, bang, chirp, ect.
