I have my tank under my bed, and have had it there with both a stepside and fleetside bed. With a little bit of planning and some good sense you can install a working and attractive filling option without hacking your bedsides all to pieces. With both fleet and stepsides there are attractive ways to mount the spare tire inside the bed as well. I have a nice black "leather" type tire cover that goes over mine, and a bed mount that keeps it secure. Over all I think it makes for a rather attractive throwback look having the tire mounted to the side of the bed. All it takes is a little planning.

Honestly there is nothing in the world that would make me want to drive one of these trucks on the road with gas in the cab. Any inconvenience in installation pales in comparison to the idea of being burned to death in a gasoline fire after an accident. I know none of us like to think that our old trucks will ever get wrecked, but (as has been proven in this thread) it is a real possibility- and I personally value my life too much to take that chance with such a significant amount of gasoline inside a metal cab with me.
Man what a buzz kill!! Just kidding.. You make many good points.

Re: fuel tank regret

Can anyone supply me with a pic of the cab floor with the gas tank removed. The PO of my truck cut out the tank supports at the bottom. I need to see what I am missing so I can purchase some new used mounts to put back into my cab.

Yes, I have decided to put my tank back into the cab. oh, and thanks for all of your great thoughts and suggestions.

Re: fuel tank regret

most of the takes that fit in a 63-66 will fit in a 60-62 you will just have to a little more work and be creative when strapping it in.

Re: fuel tank regret

bonehead,

Do you still need pictures? I am going the "under bed" route and have taken my original tank out. It had about half a tank of fuel left in it. I tried to pour it out but there was so much rust and scale that the fuel almost dripped out instead of poured out. I'm not sure what it would take as far as labor and money to fix. I'm willing to "pay it forward" and give it to you if you'd like it.

Not trying to highjack your thread, but this seems like a good place to ask this question. I'm installing a 5.3 and will need a tank capable of supplying fuel to an EFI engine. Will the rear mount aftermarket tank the LMC sells (http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cbe/full.aspx?Page=35) work? It says it has fittings for return and/or vapor lines.

Re: fuel tank regret

Thanks, but I found the picture I was looking for. I have the replacement tank mounts coming, thanks to Mack B, to replace my hacked mounts (no thanks to the PO).

I would only trade for a nice clean (currently in use) tank or I will buy a new one.

Re: fuel tank regret

I wasn't looking to trade, I was just going to give it to you if you felt the time and effort would be worth it.

Re: fuel tank regret

I have all the parts you need to bring it back to stock. Gas tank, straps filler neck, with new rubber coupling, including c-clamps, original gas lines, rubber pads and stock gas cap. The biggest thing you need is the welding in gas tank stand which are behind the seat. Is your hacked up or is is left alone? Not only are they the gas tank mounts (and for the staps), they are body supports for the back and floor of the cab. I don't have those. I hacked mine up. I have it listed in SF craigslist, cheap!

Re: fuel tank regret *update*

Ok guys here is an update on my c-10 cab tank retrofit.

I welded the tanks mounts back into my cab. Rather than remove the whole neutered bracket from the cab (there are a lot of spot welds), I did a splice about 1/2 inch behind the bolts. This way the bolts held the new stub pieces in place while I welded them fully. Now they are rock solid and ready to be painted.

I also reopened the filler on the side of the cab. I did this by first using a hole-saw to remove most of the metal patch, than trimming as close as I could to the edge with tin snips. Then I ground the rest back to the original folded edge using a small round grinding stone in my drill. I just snuck up on the edge and it come out great. the rubber and filler neck fit perfect.

As soon as I get the mounting brackets painted I will start installing the tank. When I get everything hooked up but the fuel line I will then remove the rear tank and finish hooking up the fuel supply to the new/old cab tank.

I will update as things progress for those who might have an interest in this retrofit.
