Re: Help finding tapping noise.

I haven't checked since the person I bought from asked me not to open it up. In case something major was wrong with it he would swap me engines. I don't know if I want to go through all that since its in already. Would it be better to fix the issue or replace the engine?

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

If you have a warrienty on the motor I would see what the seller wants you to do. A cam and lifter swap is most likely close to 900 bucks. The heads have to come off to get lifters out. If they will give you a new motor I would do that. Much faster then a cam lifter swap.

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

So i ran it without the belt and it still has the same knock, took the covers off as well. I have also been thinking of just going with an aftermarket cam but will see what the seller say's once he gets back to me.

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

One way to locate lifter tick is to slip your friends feeler gauge between valve stem and RA while it's ticking.

Another check is to time how long it takes for all RA to get oil after cold start.

Verify 10 psi per 1000 rpm hot oil pressure.

I would check lifter bore wear on the tickers b4 buying new lifters.

Can disassemble some lifters and check for trash.

Can compare lifter leak down rates on the bench.

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

I was told to use mystery oil and run the truck for a couple days and see if it helps the lifters. What do you guys think?

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

I haven't driven the truck but I've let it run at least 2 hrs. Oh and the seller started ignoring my calls, got the advice from someone else. I just want to try this before I go knocking his gates down.

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

Was it a private seller or a company? Did you buy it with a paypal account?

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

That sucks. I use paypal for all i can. If you ever run in to a issue like this they will help you fix it. I would try the oil and then go visit them.

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

How long did the motor sit for?
Stick a quart or 2 of ATF in it and run it for a while then change the oil.

You can't get lifters out without popping the heads off...

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

Since I've had it 6 months. I'm not sure before I got, my guess close to a yr. Should I drive it for a few days?

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

If it's just lifter tick then I'd stick some ATF in it and drive it a couple hundred miles. If it's going to clean up that oughta do it.
Sometimes after sitting they'll have a hard time pumping back up after being compressed for so long. Varnish builds a ridge inside them and the cup won't go past it.

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

Drive it. As long as it's got good oil pressure(which that's very good), you're good to go.

Re: Help finding tapping noise.

I fired mine up the other day and for the first few minutes after sitting all year (and a fresh oil change) it taps for a few until the oil warms up and gets everywhere.

I also noticed a louder *tap* this time, and noticed the exhaust gasket blew out at the 02 flange, and the tap was the rythmic exhaust escaping.

On a quite mild engine, exhaust and lifter noise normally sound very different but on a loud performance engine exhaust leaks can be tricky.
