Re: Fair body work price
That makes sense to me. Show us some pictures of the 'before' and we can let you know if there is more hiding that may boost the price on you.
I thought it was just a few things and it took me way longer to complete it once I dug in. |

Re: Fair body work price
6500 is cheap for what you described. I do not know the shops level of work, but for that kind of money I wouldn't expect him to be using high end materials. If it was in my shop paint materials alone would be around $3k.

Re: Fair body work price
Something to consider about "lifetime" warranties...it's life of the product only by LAW....
For example...I work in the Cabinet industry. Many manufacturers offer a "limited lifetime" warranty...that covers the original purchaser for the life of the product...depending on the state that is only 5-7 years...and doesn't cover normal wear and tear or abuse....so in reality...the warranty doesn't cover much or for very long...

Re: Fair body work price
Got another quote. This one for $5200 for the same work. He said he will stand behind his work until the day he dies!!!!!!! He said the main reason he is cheaper is because he only charges $35 per labor hour (no overhead).. He figured about 70 labor hours, which seems kind of low to me, but i dont know. He has 25 years experience. Got two more quotes to get.

Re: Fair body work price
70 hours seems waaaaaaaaay low for quality work doing the repairs, prep, and paint you are planning. I had 70 hours of just sanding in my blazer easily...probably more...2-3 guys over 4-5 days....probably closer to 80-90 hours sanding (initial, after filler, after primer)

Re: Fair body work price
Not to rain on your parade, but I wouldn't expect much for a 70 hour job.

Re: Fair body work price
I'll have to clarify that i heard him correctly on the hours. I need to make sure also that he isnt just low ballng the hours to get the job and then come in way over hours..

Re: Fair body work price
70 hours is nowhere near what I spent on the body work on mine and I have a few more rust spots to fix.
The 70 hour/lower cost might get you started, but there may be more to it once he gets going. |

The other lifetime warranty shop got back to me on a price and it was going to be over $10,000 .. Plus they wouldn't be able to touch it for 2 months.

Re: Fair body work price
I'm almost embarrassed to say what I'm paying. For all bodywork and paint. I was quoted 1000, 1500, and 1500 from three local shops. I am so glad I live where I live. I went with the 1000 guy but told him it was too cheap. We agreed on 1300. Later he asked if he could do the entire interior for an extra 300. I said no. Make it 500. So far we had a paint overage of 300 but he's doing incredible work. It's in a red primer now and he said its a filler primer and he has to follow with a grey primer then paint. Said he's going to put seven coats. It needed a good amount of bodywork and welding too.
I feel bad. How could he be making any money, all material is included. I'm definitely going to give him more when he's done but I just can't see how these prices can be worth it for the guy. I've seen his work and its extremely good. He even pulled out the windshield to get a tiny spot of rust out. Posted via Mobile Device |
