Re: I want to build a Chevy 327 - need tech help
The 327's are internally balanced so the only question on the balancer is its outside dimension. Most were 6.75 and the large journal were 8 inch.

Re: I want to build a Chevy 327 - need tech help
If you want a true 327, they seem to pop up on Craigslist pretty regular. Usually tired old original units from impalas, trucks, etc. Perfect rebuild candidates.

Re: I want to build a Chevy 327 - need tech help
In 72, the crank pulley like that was actually two pulleys bolted on top of each other. If the truck didn't get power steering and AC, it just used one pulley

Re: I want to build a Chevy 327 - need tech help
If you do the 307 crank in the 350 block it will get you a cheap 327. Just remember that the 307 crank is cast and not forged like GM used in 327, also that the 307 crank was made for the standard pedestrian market....not the high performance market. I would not play with a big cam or high RPM in a cast crank 327. GM did make a very limited number of forged 327 large journal in early 1969 (read rare and very expensive). Like said earlier, check with one of the crank manufactures to find a large journal 3.25 stroke crank and install that in a 350 block. I like the 327 too, but drive a 406 SB and you'll never look back (sorry could not resist). The balancers for the all SBC built between 1969 and 1986 (2 piece rear main) will work for a 327 fine....EXCEPT the one for a SB 400. This is also true for the flexplate/flywheel.

Re: I want to build a Chevy 327 - need tech help
I had a 327 in a 78 Malibu I had over 10 years ago. It was rebuilt, had a Holley 600 and some alum intake. Cam was either stock, or very mild. When I took the car for a test drive, it smoked the sh!t out of the one legged right rear tire. Granted it was a 14" tire, but anyways the motor did run good. I pulled the motor out after it developed a knock, put in a 400. I pulled the heads after I got the motor out, couldn't find anything about the heads, casting numbers didn't come up anywhere. I don't remember what the numbers where, but there was some on the pistons. I told them to builder, he told me they were 350 flat top pistons. After that, I looked at the pistons, and they were 1/4" below the deck!!!! How it ran I don't know, but it did run good. I for one like to be different, but it's really hard to beat a 400. The one I swapped in had well over 100k on it, and I put 60k at least on it before I had the 468 built.
And I forgot bout the small/large journal cranks, my 327 was from a 69 Camaro, IIRC the casting number was the same as a 350, or one digit off....

Re: I want to build a Chevy 327 - need tech help
so a 8 inch balancer will fit on an engine with a fixed timing tab meant for a 62-68 327?
