Finally got the Jimmy home, put the rear end on jack stands, pulled off the old split rims and tires, and pulled the rear drums off to check out pads. Posi in the rear diff, not sure the gears front and rear, whats the best way to confirm without pulling covers? more pictures attached.

The easiest way would to rotate the tire one full turn and count how many times the driveshaft rotates. Mark the driveshaft and the rim. 3 1/2 rotations = 355's, 4 1/2 = 456's.

Yep, short of pulling the covers and counting teeth, raise it off the ground and mark the driveshaft and housing. Spin one revolution and count the rotation of the shaft to the rotation of the tire. Simple enough except, I did that that once and somehow got it wrong. I thought I had 2.76's and they were 3.73's when we pull the cover. I attached 2 pdf's for 72 Blazers, mostly for anyone else looking for what there K5's came with. Also added my Pickups file for C/K's. The Blazer I just finished, attached are before and after. The GMC Suburban is my next project. As you can see your Jimmy is considerably better than what I usually start with with, lol!

What rear axle is it? If the axles match the front Dana 44 should have a ratio tag on cover bolts. Same true for rear if its a 60, but not if it's the Eaton. I'd pull covers and change fluids because it has sat so long. Then you will know what ratio and what type traction device. It has an aftermarket truss on the front. Any other add ons youve found?

Great looking jimmy, even lucked out with a single wall top. I really like the look of the wheels and tires with it, I would clean it and keep it as is.

Thanks for all the responses and questions. I will post some more pictures later tonight. Heading over to my shop to work on the Jimmy. Wish I had more time, working 70hrs a week, need more time to work on the toy/Jimmy. The rims that were on the truck when I bought it were split rims, and bald bias ply tires. Bought a set of new Goodyear Wrangler HT load rating E, with 16" x 7" steel factory rims, excellent shape near new, $500 Gonna run the factory GMC stainless steel deep dog dish factory 3/4 ton hub caps all around, looking for a set of 4. Will have to hog out the centre for the from hubs. I will confirm what the 3rd and 4th switches are for on the bezel. Will check the gear ratio on the diffs also, going to definitely change all the fluid everywhere. I ordered a new steel gas tank, sending unit, and comes with new straps, be here in a week. Got a call into the original owners son to talk about when his father changed the running gear around and why. Thanks everyone Ray.

attached are some pictures of the rims and tires I just picked up.
I went with a load rating E because I have 3 trailers and will more that likely use the Jimmy once in a while. I will be changing the 3/4 ton running gear back to the original 1/2 ton 6 bolt later down the road. I marked the drive shafts and tire and came up with 4:56 ratio. |

Super find! I would say by the condition of the interior it only has 13k miles of wear on it. Really nice interior.

Gotta agree with Dave, streering wheel, drivers seat, and pedals all have minimal wear. Did it have any service records with it...
Looks like a surviver to me. Those 1/2 ton rears are all over the place on the east coast, people want 3/4 ton rears with 4.56 gears for 35" tires

Found a bulge in one of the tires, gonna return them and look for some 33 or 35's. Would like to use it with the 3/4 ton diffs till end of summer and pull off the road to do 1/2 ton conversion, you never know might work the way it is. Just would like to see it all put back to stock original condition.

Are you gonna restore it, or preserve and maintain this sweet survivor? I just recently picked myself up a 72 Jimmy, not as original as yours, but Jimmys i heard were a lot more rare than the K5.

My plan is to bring it back to original, just want to use it for the summer. The original owner did all the service work, never let anyone work on it.

Man can believe it's been close to a year since I posted pictures and info about my 1972 Jimmy. Runs great, put a rebuild, date coded quadra-jet back on it, factory air cleaner, replaced points, condensor, cap, wires and plugs. new battery and gas tank. Passed our local air car station with really low numbers. Gonna put 3 or six months insurance on it, and just drive it, get all the bugs out of it. Picked up a hood and cowl with exact colour, in great shape from a friend in the interior for $100. Bought a rechromed grill, 2 mint eyebrow chrome pieces, 2 stainless mirror, that match original, and 2 more factory dog dish hubcaps for $400. Can't wait to get all the parts switched over and pop the hard top off for summer. I attached some more pictures of me cleaning the rear interior floor and mats, the floor is mint, never seen one so clean, under the original mats. Great to be back.
