Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
I am right there with you. I am working on the worst cab EVER! or so I am convinced. I continue to find something else wrong with it. The just attempted to cover it up with sheet metal, screws, and tar. Should have scrapped it, but have too much money in sheet metal and countless hours and too many cuts to turn back now.

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
well ima tell you what i did. i started weldin the floor and wanted it to be flawless under the mat and looking from below well many yrs later. i just yesterday finishd the welding and started to "contour" my weld so it apears to be no work done and put the first coat a shorthair glass in various spots so dont give up and cheap it out with less the good work, lest its a beater cuz when u drive it ur gonna kick urself from the shortcuts. dont get me wrong ive turned a few corners myself, but not so many that its obvious. just cuss the heck outofit and dream of that day when u will be watching other folks drool over ur work...

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
funny, I would park my restored anything next to your drivers than a suv ect.
hang in there LT1Burb. remember the finished project. and the bodywork is the worst! But in saying that, the finished product is very satisfying. as in my build, yes i have small dents after i painted that show and people (experts)will pick those out. yes i could fix them, but I am not building a show tk. the bottom line is when it's finished (are they ever) then you will do more little things to it lol. sorry for the rambling.

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
When things are going good, all the hard work, sweet and sometimes blood are all rewarded with extreme satisfaction. After I finish a a small project, I always take the time afterward to grab a refreshment and admire my handy work, Its physical and phycological therapy. When things go bad or when you cant get something apart is when you need a break to regroup and get a better game plan, It took me over a year to get my truck on the road, im not done but can drive it, and now that I can drive it, it will be awhile before I do any more to it that will take it off the road. Getting it on the road is the best medicine for that c10 indigestion

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
Supercharged is right, it is a marriage. Sometimes it feels like an abusive relationship. Taking more time, money, blood, sweat, and sometimes tears than you thought at first. If you love it, it is worth it in the end. Don't get so caught up in the bad to realize what you have already completed. Walk away for a week or two, fresh air helps. When you come back, it's like a new set of eyes on it. If it was easy, everyone would have one.

I hear you. I am getting the "getitdoneitis" but keep telling myself to take my time. Just when I think I am done buying stuff for the engine bay I find something else.

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
Working on my truck is therapy. I can go out in the garage, turn on some tunes, and forget all the normal day to day stuff. That's why I named my project "Sanity66". The way I keep from burning out is to jump around from one task to another when I start to get tired or frustrated. It makes for somewhat of a disjointed build thread sometimes but it keeps me moving along. It's all things that need to be done and I keep records of where I'm at on a certain project and what can be done next as I move along so I don't forget where I left off as I move around.

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
If I spent as much time with my wife as I do with my truck, I'd be sick of her too.

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
Gear drive starter just ZINGED the teeth off the ring gear today. 2nd AAA tow for this truck in 6 months. Should have painted it yellow not orange grrrrrr. Looks like I'm sliding back a transmission tomorrow and missed a camp trip tonight.
Thought I would share some frustration on the other side of the fence. Good news, fired off the treager and made a burger that was almost as good as yours!

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
I have been working on mine for over 2 years now. I am down to the exhaust, horn and painting the door panels. I took the front grill off and wanted to repaint it because the clear meed up. I sanded it, premiered and shot the new white on it. All of lifted up and had lines in the paint. So I have sand it back down and start again. It's just a pain to do things more than once and lately I seem to be doing them twice. I cant wait to get this thing done!

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
I like to just pick one thing and work on that. Not one half of the truck, but one tiny thing. Right now it's hub removal. Then it'll be hub inspection. Then bearings. Remember you'll live to be 100 and can probably turn wrenches till you're 85 or so.
As for paint, I just bawled out POR15 for such high prices. (Grumble grumble grumble!) Apparently they aren't listening through my computer microphone though. I doubt they heard me, but still...Painting it yourself is going to cost a few hundered dollars for materials and guns. Paying someone else to paint it, that's thousands. I don't have that much to spend on a pet project, as much as I love her. It just ain't going to happen. I'd rather buy any number of other things or save it for retirement. So we make due and take it slow and I almost never get the blues about the project. I sometimes miss driving her when she's down, but it's never for too long. And sometimes, on dark, lonely nights when no one is looking and the street light is out, I like to sneak out with a bottle of wine, a can of high grade gasoline, and a pair of jumper cables... Oh wait, what was I saying? Seriously though, you just gotta love it for what it is. Sometimes AS it is.

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
Well I'm venting... Over the last 10 months...
I received the truck with 91000 miles, the engine stuck, no brakes and many other issues (it was THE most basic truck you could get at the time. 6 cyl, single barrel, no power anything, no options except emergency blinkers. Which no longer work.) So far I've: Put in brake lines, fixed major brake problems (with my dad)(and the rear drums still need a rebuild) Got most electrical demons out of the system (both of us) Managed to get the engine running(both) Fixed the bed with a couple support patches and plywood overtop the old wood (mostly me) fiberglassed, bondoed, primered, painted dang near everything (sometimes solo, but definitely both) replaced tailgate, latches, the works (both) carb rebuild (solo) Welded in new rockers and floor panels (my dad) Swapped in and fixed a passenger door (both) Fixed both vent windows (both) And a ton of other things I can't think of right now. Today was its first day on the road and after about 36 miles the fuel pump failed. We think. Point is, I feel as if I've put my heart, soul, willpower, energy, and everything else into this thing and it's still not great. To top it off, the tow truck wasn't a rollback and dented the driver's front fender while backing up in a turn. I'm losing my sanity. or what's left of it.

Re: The I am sick of working on my truck thread
Go easy on yerself. Truck is 50 years old. I put in a new motor, three rear main seals, two oil pan gaskets, two intake gaskets and two valve adjustments, lookin at a third adjustment or a lifter replacement next oil change, a new transmission, two new trans speedo seals, a new trans rear seal and then another and now the pinion seal leaks.
I adjusted the carb and timing 342eleven times till I found a right setting and now netting 18.5ish mpg and running 65+ on the interstate regularly. Chased headlight and turn signal gremlins till I ripped out the wires and made a new harness from scratch, broke a new throwout bearing and replaced it.... and the list go's on. Mine is a daily driver but its rare to go a month without lifting the hood and tweaking something. What I'm sayin is, it'll get to reliable daily driver status and then you'll spend a few hours each week for the rest of its life keepin it there. I'm 16K miles down the road in mine in one year and more of that spent in reliable worry free drivin than in frustratin breakdowns or tuning. Even if it does hiccup, ye'll know its systems inside and out an most often fix it in no time flat. I wouldn't have any other truck! |
