Continually over the course of my 2 year restoration I've been searching for and hassling people about finding a good original reference photo of the 400 valve cover emblem.

Years later and still not a one. I guess they were not very durable. I could 'guess' and make one up as close as I can try and who would call me on it, since no one has ever seen one! But I'd still prefer they were close to right.

Can anyone add any visual data to this? It could be 70-only and I've only see the sticker used on Longhorns, though that doesn't mean much.

And if it says Invader 400, it's for the GMC Sprint. That's what LMC will sell you.

I remember that, and it's not that I didn't appreciate it; it's that I don't think we have a good enough source image to replicate yet. Sorry I didn't acknowledge it!

The bottom photo is indeed mine; is the top one just a photo you found or is it a truck you can get a better photo of?

Here is the original picture . . . the only one I have.

What I wrote at the time was: "70 GMC foil 3D"

Hi Dave. I took some pictures of an original 1970 GMC med. duty with a 427. It is a local city fire truck with only 3500 miles. I have access to the truck and can get you better pictures with measurements if it would be helpful.

Great piece of documentation! Thanks for posting. Low mileage fire trucks stored indoors are always a great source of info. This would leave me to believe '70 GMC 307 and 350's would use the same style decal?

Hi Bryan! Thanks, they do look similar! Too had to tell from my ratty original if they're the "same" except for the displacement number, but they're certainly close.

I would indeed love if you could get some closer photos, ideally with a ruler on it. I'm no guru but I do know how to set the scale in Photoshop so if there's a ruler in the picture I can make everything the right size.

Also if you could make any notes about what's beveled or raised or chiseled edges or anything that's 3D about it would be good to know. It's hard to get embossed decals done but if I can, all the better.

Sounds like a great lead, please chase it!

Is it just me or does the decal look like the fender emblem with the color reversed and the words "cubic inches" below the engine size? At least the 8 350 decal does.

Thanks Andy. I'd guess those are a crate motor or at least a replacement motor.

I believe Bryan has found it! Thanks so much for the photos! Between those 427 ones and my original 400 photos, I should be able to do it. They appear to be the exact same style so far as I can tell.

Do you recall if the numbers or letters were embossed (raised) at all?

Your welcome man! I knew they weren't exactly what you wanted but figured they would help. The add doesn't say if it was a crate engine are not.
I'll keep my eyes open for you though!

The sticker was definitely flat. Glad I could help. I would enjoy seeing what you come up with for a reproduction.

Those gold and black stickers are the generic ones that you can still pick up from a number of vendors.

Thanks again for all of the GREAT photos. I've saved them off and am about to start tinkering with it.

On the 1970 GMC 133WB mine was on the front driver's side, with the oil fill. The brochure above shows them on the passenger side.

I thought for a while someone swapped the valve covers at some point in its life, but they're not interchangeable are they? One has the breather and one has the oil fill.

Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
