Re: Fuel Tank Options

I t 60 - 62 frame is wider then in theory I could fabricate mounts for a 63 - 66 tank such as the one's LMC sell;

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cbe/full.aspx?Page=82

As Brad54 asks it would be handy to know how much space there is between the bed and frame. At the moment I don't have a bed or bed supports in my truck so I cant measure it.

There are 2 options with from LMC a side fill tank or top fill. Not really sure I like top fill as it would mean Id have to drill new wood which seems a shame and it strikes me as being a bit awkward.

Re: Fuel Tank Options

Guy's

Just a question, a bit off topic. A few of you have mentioned that the frame of a 63-66 is narrower at the rear, is it also narrower at the front?

Im asking as something else Im thinking of doing is changing the front suspension with a clip from a later vehicle. I believe a front clip from a 73 - 97 would be the best option but I just want to be sure that if all I can get is a 63-66 that it will fit (or not in which case I wont bother).

Re: Fuel Tank Options

The 60-62 frame will accept the 73-87 front crossmember swap very easily. It's almost a complete bolt in swap, just have to drill a couple holes and elongate a couple more. I don't know that the crossmember from 88-97 would fit.

Most of the rear gas tanks mentioned are designed to or just happen to fit the '63-'72 frames nicely. The '60-'62 frames are wider and consequently will require some extra work to fit a different tank. I believe Dave Boyd makes a fuel tank specifically for the '60-'62's which can also be fitted with an in tank pump. But it is not going to be cheap.

http://www.boydwelding.com/

Boyd welding is a forum vendor and can be found in the Vendor Marketplace.

The tank shown by Chevy Fleetside is a nice universal tank that would fit your need also.

I've had success using a '78 chevy van fuel tank that fit right between the frame rails and doesn't hang very low. Been running it for the last 9 years in my '60. Fuel sending unit works with my aftermarket Dolphin gauges.

Re: Fuel Tank Options

That is on the '63-'66 frames. On the '60-'62's I believe you have to drill most of the holes.

Re: Fuel Tank Options

Edit: Maybe I took some liberty with the phrase, "drill a couple holes". Let's just say that if you know how to use a tape measure and a drill, the 73-87 crossmember swap on a 60-62 frame is not significantly different than the 63-66 frame. You'll need a similar skill set, shop, and tools to do the work in both cases. The root of MacQuigley's question was if the 73-87 crossmember was the correct width to fit the 60-62 frame. The answer is, YES.

Re: Fuel Tank Options

To be honest guy's, it wont matter if I have to drill no holes, a couple of holes or a load of holes I will figure it out.

My problem will be getting one in the first place!

Re: Fuel Tank Options

Man, I'd LOVE to have a rear tank/license filler in my 66 longstep, but I'd also like it between the frame rails as opposed to hanging below. With all them crosspieces, it looks to be a tough sell, although I think the little one can be removed, it might be for a spare tire carrier and mine is on the bed side.

Re: Fuel Tank Options

The little one is the spare tire support. I removed mine. The side holes are perfect for the mounting of the blazer style tank. They lined up perfectly and the straps that come with the tank I used as well and fit perfect. All with the blazer style tank that cost under $200 complete with sending unit and straps. And the choice of side fill or top fill

Re: Fuel Tank Options

This is a 67-72 blazer tank kit. It sits about 1" from the bed floor. I have a 4" drop in the rear. After I put a roll pan on the truck you will probably not see much of the tank.

I was all set to order a mustang tank for my 60. Did anybody ever figure out where to get the 0-30 ohm sending unit?

Re: Fuel Tank Options

I installed a tank from a 93 s10 blazer in 04 spectra premium I think it was for around 100 bucks I used the tanks straps from the blazer and also cut out a section of the rear crossmember where the s10 tank straps were mounted to and incorporated that into my truck .as u can see beefed up the forward original bed sill member near diff and added brackets for upper and lower straps.i did had to notch the frame a tad for the filler .other reasons I like that it has the corners cut off for tail pipes also tank has baffle for fi fuel pump, sending unit has correct hanger for in tank fuel pump.if your running carb you can use a sender from 82-84 s10 blazer.this is only pic I have at the time.

Re: Fuel Tank Options

To me the Mustang tank looks the best. I know about the gauge issue. Im not an elctronics (sp)? whiz by any means. Could I just put a resistor inline that would change the ohms to 0-30?

I like the fact that it doesn't hang down at all.

Re: Fuel Tank Options

Ok that chevy tank looks great but it isn't a top fill? Not a chance im cutting a hole in this mint SWB. I figure if i put a hole in the wood and some day I want to change it back. I can just buy a new wood kit.

It's a side fill, left rear side. Mine will fill behind a hinged tail light assembly.

Re: Fuel Tank Options

Here's a tank I acquired a couple years back.
It's out of a 2000+ F150.
Why are there so many wires coming out of it?
Could it perhaps have a electric fuel pump inside?

On that 53-54 Chevy passenger car from Tanks. Think that would fit in a 64 Stepside Short Bed?
