Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

strange that it would do it on a stock engine? Im going to do the cam swap and gears in march, then take it to the tuners. Hopefully the few miles i put on it before then won't damage it

Deselect "DOD" and see if that fixes it.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

Can you discern where the noise is actually coming from? Overdriving the pump can happen on a stock truck, but it would have to be a modified tune.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

Ok, well the plan is to take it to lonestar throw down at the end of february, after that its getting a cam swap and gear change, then it goes to the tuner for a good tune. Ill have him kill the dod and adjust the pump if we discern thats what it is. Ill keep you guy posted. Planning on taking her on her maiden voyage today, minus driving in the culdesac.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

Ive already purchased the cam and spring kit. However I've been reading that the cam swap on these motors isn't necessarily the best bang for the buck>>I guess due to vvt and the fuel pump being driven off of it that there not very aggressive? What are your opinions? If performance gains are minimal is it really worth the $900 or would that be better spent elsewhere?

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

well, sent the cam and spring kit back. gonna hold off on those, Hoping to get it tuned next week. Did take her for a drive this evening and to say i am pleased would be an understatement! The dod has to go... My guy who helped with the wiring has hp tuners as well and we purchased credits for this ecm to see if the fan being switched from pwm to discrete to see if they will power the relay for the fans. However after accepting the credits with beta 2.5,( 3.0 was showing a vin/os error) it keeps failing at the boot loader stage. gets to 57% then says failed? any suggestions?

Just curious, but why do you want to take the PWM fan control out?

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

The fans don't care what controls them. The PWM controller will turn them on and off at temp too, just smoother, a little nicer way of running them.

In case you are interested, here's a little thread on how to make them work with cheaper parts. http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...connector.html

Wait, 3.0 was showing an error? Which one.

2.5 beta was IMO an evil b!tch. Too many software crashes and resets to make me comfortable.

If it was running before, what version was it licensed on? Config files/readouts aren't backwards compatible. 3.0 overwrites the PC-side install files (this should all be on the VCM editor, not volatile to the tune afaik).

Just please tell me that the old tune wasn't pass locked when you tried to flash with a newer version of HPT.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

3.0 was showing the vin/os error. The ecm was flashed with 2.5 from the tuners to eliminate the vats. Its not locked. Im not gonna mess with it anymore ecm wise until the tuner gets ahold of it. Thats not my forte obviously..lol. It makes me nervous when we plug into it. He emailed hp tuners about it and they think its a connection issue (wiring), yet the scanner tool will pull codes and read the vin from the ecm with no issues. Also the signal is obviously there as my dakota digital gauges all run from the obd signal. Also read on the forums that a battery issue will cause the boot loader failure. Its got a brand new yellow top optima in it so i don't think its low voltage there.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

I'm following along. I'm installing a 2015 5.3 and 8 speed in my 72. Finding the harness I need has been difficult due to no one making the harness... YET!

Keep up the good work and good luck at the show!

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

The 8spd is very finnicky about shift points, and you can't effectively lock it in gear. If your leaving the motor fairly stock it shouldn't be too bad to just leave alone, but if you make large changes, be prepared to do a few hours on the trans tables. It is kinda fun knowing your in 7th gear though.

also for further reference, the dakota digital gauges which are run from the can-bus is what was throwing the errors on hp tuners. unplugged them and bam, worked like a champ! After the tune, just plug them back in

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

got the ac charged up but the compressor im not building pressure. Really dumb question but I've got the clutch wired up to the binary switch. Do i need to put power to the solenoid set of wires on the compressor as well?

Makes sense. The HPt probably thinks that there is another device "intercepting" the data, which is a no-no. I'm sure they have reasons, but my assumption is that potentially could allow you parallel the connection and somehow copy a file.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

got about 800 miles on it now. Did a gear change to 4:10 with posi, she'll roast em for sure! I have run into a random issue thats happened 3 times. Its acting as if the fuel pedal goes dead. No response at all, just idles. I shut off power to the ecm and reset it and its back to normal. Its done it at low speeds all 3 times but at random throttle positions. My code history doesn't show anything at all but I may be deleting them when i reset the ecm. Don't know if they stay in history or not. Any ideas? I think if it was a loose connection that reseting the ecm wouldn't fix it.....

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

If your shutting it down right away, it might be clearing them as *pending* codes. If its a T, or B code, then you might not see it on normal handheld scanners.

It sounds like the DBW was being interrupted. I ran into an issue involving magnetic interference, but thats beeeyyyyooonnnddd rare. Check the connections as Hart said. Look at the purple and yellow wires on the TB, make sure all connectors are fully seated. Check that the DBW isn't sharing and grounds with another system.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10

LOVE your ride man...Any updates to share? I scored a low mile 14' 5.3/6l80e for an awesome price for my 72 chevy lwb and I'm watching your progress. Honestly I still dont know if im going to stay with this motor setup. I like the novelty and the cool factor of it but simplicity is a beautiful thing also, and that would be a 6.0/4l80e to me. I guess I can work my way through it with these kinds of boards out there. I did an ls1/ 6 speed swap into a 65 replica cobra in 1999 or so and it was relatively new at the time so I just need to muster the courage.
