Re: Newbie with new ride
The blue in the picture was the seat cover, it's gone now and it revealed a perfectly good original seat with no tears or stains. The blue cover must have been installed early in the trucks life. The original seat is fine. I got lucky...

There's no harm in fixing broken things, of course, just be sure to source OEM parts when possible. Also, pay attention to the factory finishes when replacing things, and watch the "original" threads on this site for details. We've come quite a long way on this site over the last few years in this regard, and the trend for preservation in collectors circles is not slowing. Please don't think that I'm saying you should be afraid to enjoy your truck, not at all, just that irreversible mistakes can be made in seconds when one is not aware. I assume the truck is mostly, if not all original as far as paint goes, right? I noticed the lock rings on the wheels are body color. I'm pretty sure these are plated (or painted?) silver from the factory. Do you see any evidence of other dark blue touch ups around? Just curious. The picture below is of member Sodly's truck. A super nice low-mile survivor '66 as well. Last edited by oem4me; 02-27-2016 at 12:46 PM. |

Re: Newbie with new ride
Don't know the story on the lock rings. I was aware that they were silver from the factory and just figured these had been painted later on at some point but, when I took possession of the truck, the seller didn't have the spare at the moment, it was still squirreled away at the old homestead where the elder uncle had lived. He retrieved it for me about a week later and lo and behold its lock ring is blue also with a very old tire mounted on it with no signs of ever being replaced. So, I'm not sure about the factory color of the rings being accurate or not. Maybe it did come this way?
Not sure about the paint. If it has been painted in the past, it was done a long time ago and it was a very good repaint. There are no signs of overspray anywhere. The only spot I question is on the A pillars where the white on the cab meets the blue on the cowling. The passenger side tape line seems more jagged than the driver side. The entire paint now is weathered and has been touched up alot over the years, its by no means perfect now. My intent is to preserve the paint as it is today, try to clean up the bad spots of touch up paint and just go with the "survivor" paint look. |

Re: Newbie with new ride
Engine back in and running, chassis gone through and painted, now starting on the exterior of truck. Gonna wet sand entire truck and then wheel it out and keep the "survivor look" with all it's existing blemishes. Sorry to all the purists out there but there are some non O.E.M. components on this truck that already existed and that I've also added for personal taste...

Re: Newbie with new ride
Damn that's a nice truck man. Now I am regretting painting my 327 orange. What color is that? Rattle can or single stage? I wonder if I could just respray my engine without it flaking off.
Also, do you know the paint code for the blue your truck is painted? Also a color I may use for my truck. Thanks |

Re: Newbie with new ride
Thanks for the comments.
The engine paint is Dupli-color brand spray paint - ALPINE GREEN, DE1618 and the truck paint is 1966 Chevrolet DARK BLUE, code 508. |
