Re: How rare is a factory manual trans?

I have 3.08 gears so I take off in 1st when uphill, and sometimes on flat ground. I can still take off in 2nd anywhere though because I'm halfway decent with the clutch.

If by 1st you mean compound low gear, no, people don't do that. 1st gear [what I think your reffering to as 2nd out of 4 total] is the same ratio as a normal trans 1st gear, no reason not to use it regardless of rear end ratio unless your towing large weight.

Yes - I think technically it is considered a three speed with a creeper gear.

People do! I just like rowing the extra gear maybe...

No - virtually never!

Unless starting on a steep hill or pulling some awful load, or on some rough road where you need to go slow (my C20 can go most places that the 4x4's go).

Heck, with the engine warmed up I hardly go 50 feet when starting out it second gear, before shifting to third.

Depends on the axle ratio(s) of course - I had a K10 that had race car gears for gas mileage

Re: How rare is a factory manual trans?

Yes I use the Low gear when hauling a load, such as when I was towing cars this weekend. Engagement is much smoother when you have 6000lbs attached to the truck otherwise in daily driving I don't use it much if at all.
