Re: Whyyyy

They made millions of em. My father had a great derby candidate years ago. 72 K10 short. 350 4speed. The body was gone - nothing but a frame and running gear. Plowed like a mule though!

Playing devil's advocate for a minute. Why would someone take a running and driving Taurus or Corsica and smash it all up? Maybe there's a poor person that doesn't even have a car that would love the opportunity to have that old car.

First of all, I'm not arguing. I'm just presenting a well thought out counter to a poor comparison. You start out asking "why" and now you say "go for it". I'll have to learn to remember not to put much value in what you say I guess

Now that would be a serious crime against these trucks I thought we were all here for because we love them. They didn't make millions of those at all. In fact, they barely made more than a thousand. That frame today is worth good money with everything else gone (with title and VIN-plate). Am I out of line here? This IS www.67-72chevytrucks.com and not a Ford or Dodge site, isn't it? Where did you people come from? I'm half laughing, but really?? Wow

I was half laughing too when I posted it. I know it's a desirable truck. I wanted to make it road worthy and drive it when I was a kid but once I was 16 I realized what a job that would have been. The previous owner had a bad reputation locally and supposedly drove that truck off a bridge drunk in the early 90s. The frame was cracked right behind the motor but all in all an easy fix. My dad is one of those Camaro Chevelle big block 4 speed guys who doesn't think any of these trucks are that desirable. Like the others have said, this is America. To each their own.

yes i know, but what i ran was already smahed, taurus with no windows, and air bags deployed, basically totaled, corsca, well was in a rear ender, with a truck, i think ford( i found the logo in the smashed up trunk) if it was a good car to drive, id have drove it, or fixed and sold it, if the vehicle is dead, no hope of being brought back, then derby it, if it has even a slightest chance of being restored, its getting fixed, like my truck, its a good condition truck, so its getting fixed, my brother in law tried getting me to kick the windows, i told him to get his own truck, now if the beds shot, and cab then have a lil fun with it, if it cant be restored.

Re: Whyyyy

Early 90s Camrys are the best for the 4 cal cars. I've won a lot of derbies with them. I don't give a dang if someone else could use it or not. I find them and use them for what I want.

im saying why to a good truck, i say go for it if the thing has so much rot that it aint worth saving. The trucks in both pictures appear to be saveable, not rusted out hunks of junk.

rust like that would be almost a derby canidate, but probably not unless it was like that all over the truck.,

I was hoping not to raise your hairs. I should have known your were being half funny, too. I guess the ole knee jerks pretty easy when it comes to seeing great old trucks senselessly destroyed. It's true, this is America where idiots are allowed to do dumb things as long as they don't infringe on the rights of others. I don't care much about Chevelles and Camaros. They're just cars

Re: Whyyyy

Yeah it is sad seeing good 67-72 end their lives in the derby but its a BLAST! I ran this 77' GMC this year. The sad thing is the truck looked/looks better after I stripped it and smashed it than when I bought it for $200 and DROVE it home. I will say though it is a beast with a 455 olds under the hood. I could fix it and run it again, although I am going to turn it into a fun pre-runner style truck to play in the woods.

Pics of my carnage. I will say I did feel a bit bad for doing this to the truck...although after the first hit that feeling was long gone!

That's proof that square body's don't explode when hit in the bedside! Haha. I dig the racing seat. I've always wanted to try one in a derby but haven't ever ponied up for one. I imagine there will be a bunch of pissed east coaster people when they see how rust free that truck was. They'll get over it, looks like a good time to me.

I watched an 85s bed go BOOM after one hit rust went everywhere! if i find a video clip il link it, it was awesome, it was two squares, one a 77 k20, and one an 86 c10, and another 95 burb. lil 86 was the one that had a bed boom

Good call Tim, which is exactly why I thought about the shape of that truck. Most people out here don't think twice trucks like that one.

Re: Whyyyy

I was talking to a guy in a small town in Kansas last Friday. they regularly participate in all the "local" derbies. They have a custom reinforced rear axle and housing that was about $4000, a $3500 transmission, and a $4000 engine that they move from derby car to derby car.

The top purse is in the $2500 range. Sounds like a lot of money for little return, but I guess if you LOVE doing it......

Yeah, there's been no use for 73-77s back east since 1980. Those bodies (frames, oil pans, anything steel) rotted through by then. I've seen rust free western 73/74 K/5s (full top) for sale I would have loved to have bought and brought back east. But, that would be as bad as running one in a derby...certain death! Just the ambient moisture would eat a babied one up. I've only ever owned '78-up square bodies. My brother-in-law had a '77 K30 454/4pd Silverado Big Dooley I could have had for a couple grand back in '81 or 2 with 30k on it. It was rotted up but I considered it to swap the clean body of the blue '78 C30 454/4spd I had onto. But the frame was crusted, scaley, and thin. What a shame. I have plenty of other stories of those trucks rotting way before their time. Ford guys ate it up!

Re: Whyyyy

Our parts truck is a 79 K10. Black short bed. 350 4 speed with buckets and tach. It's currently in two pieces - split right between the bed and cab at the frame. No one cut it, it rotted out. Back in NY, I'd never seen any 73-77 trucks on the road at all. A damn shame.

Re: Whyyyy

73-77s in Indiana? You all don't get snow and rain and salty roads? I went with 67-72s in '73 because I liked them better. Bought a '72 next to new. I got t-boned and truck was totalled in '75. By then I had already heard about '73s having rust when owners were still making payments. My friend's dad had a '73 and the oil pan rusted out by that time, and it was just a chore truck. He bought a '75 Blazer and that rotted out. He had the body all redone and it rusted out again. GM was replacing bedsides for free for a long time past warranty. That's why you saw Fords with bumper stickers that said, "On a quiet night you can hear a Chevy rusting". Ironically, at that time the 67-72 Ford cab mounts and two piece bedsides were rusting out and the 67-72 GMs were rock solid still. if no one cares in Indiana it's because they are rust buckets.

I think he's in IL- must be down by the river if he's still seeing 73-77s all the time. Up in NE Indiana anything made before 1990 is usually long gone. And some of us in Indiana do care-BTW

Re: Whyyyy

Ok sorry, a misprint. I meant no one cares wherever he is where he said no one cares and it started with an "if". Does it make a difference when we are talking rust? I stand corrected if IL has 73-77s that still have good metal. I'm surprised to learn that.
