Re: What trans cooler
I used a power steering cooler from a 90 corvette. It is an aluminum tube cooler with aluminum fins.
It's essentially cooling the same type of fluid, and about the same viscosity. Mounted it behind the right step right off the frame. Made some aluminum brackets for it, and a small air deflector to get the air to go through it. After stopping the truck, and crawling under it, I can put my hand on the trans pan, and it doesn't feel very hot. Like maybe the same as the water hose coming out of the engine. Like 160 or so Gotta use my temp gun to actually check the pan temp, but I can hold my hand on the pan without getting it too hot. Course, with the 4+3, there is less fluid than with an automatic trans. Mine is essentially a Super T-10 4 speed with a mini powerglide bolted on the back. Makes for a long trans, and an altered driving technique, I have it hooked up manually , so I can select the overdrive for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. There is a first gear lockout switch to keep from burning up the clutches. The trans overdrive is Sort of like a gear splitter. 3rd overdrive is 200 RPM less than straight 4th. 4th overdrive gives me 1800 at 75 mph. lots less noise and fuel consumption.
