If it is back firing and loss of power your distributor and timing are off. If you took the distributor out and put it back and are off by a tooth you will stay off. Find top dead center on 1 and make sure the rotor button lines up with #1 in the cap. This is square one then check the fuel pump.

Yup, I got the timing taken care of, finally...and the fuel pump looks like it's working. It was running real good last night, drove it this morning & it still ran pretty good. On the way home tonight, chugging up hills...found the tension on the secondary spring was non existent again...came off the rod under the airhorn...more adjustment's in my future...

On other thing, probably not your issue but cheap insurance. I rebuilt a small block once. Distributor was fine when I tore the engine down. I put it back together and just changed the cap and rotor. After the rebuild it ran great until I hit a hill and then it would bog. I changed out the advance and springs in the distributor and bam it was running awesome. They did not look bad but something was going on with them

That thought crossed my mind too....did you put the stock type weights & springs in or did you use one of the aftermarket kits?

I used the after market kit found at all the auto parts stores. They usually have 3 sets of springs. I used the light ones of course 😂

What do you think would be a good choice of springs for my pretty much stock setup? I did notice some rub marks on top of the weights yesterday when I had the rotor off...loose springs letting things bounce around?

I'd put the middle set in and see how it does. They are easy to swap
