It's covered in assembly lube and you're seeing the teeth that got damaged. Like I said, the gear is ACDelco 10456413. It's the right gear though.

You outta write this one up for the rockauto.com newsletter. They have a special column in it just dedicated to blunders. I don't know if they give out any compensation for stories they print, but wow....I feel your pain. Way back in time, I once pressure washed a C-4 automatic tranny without the converter in it...yep water got in...yep ruined. We've all been there.

Unfortunately, you installed your new gear upside down.

Sorry, didn't read up far enough before I responded .... yeah, I've got a loooong list of upside down, backwards, wrong size, lost pieces confessions.

Now that we know what went wrong, do you guys think that this lends itself more or less now to the cam being chewed up too bad to keep running it?

I'd pull it and post up pics of it next. Youve gotten this far, so fix it right and don't just let this thread die. I say you gotta document the repairs too.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????

I believe you indicated you loosen the oil pan and tried to remove it but could not based on the clearance to the frame. How confident are you on resealing the pan gasket with the clearance issue. Most of the time the oil pan will be a leaker, no one needs a leaker.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????

.
Hopefully you have a hoist/crane to lift the block a bit to get the pan fully off and make room to do the gasket cleaning/replacement.

Now is a good time to find a camera and inspect your cam dist drive gear. Either that or pull it out.

Get the number one piston up on TDC on compression stroke and point the dizzy to where the number one spark plug wire is...simple....no damage done !!

Where are the pics of the damage ?
If the oil pump shaft is in the wrong position the distributor is not going to sit all the way down facing the #1 plug without using something to turn the oil pump shaft.

I guess you didn't understand how I described how I do it.....my process works great for me, I use the dizzy to turn the oil pump shaft.... its the old lift and turn the rotor method, been doing it for years like back into the 60's.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????

YoungPups method works perfect......If the the dist body is not seated tight on the intake you are not tight like prom night. The engine will run fine but NO oil pressure if you do it wrong.

Not saying you are wrong because I never tried it but are you saying you can lift the distributor enough to get it out of the cam gear and then turn the rotor and move the oil pump shaft?
I always used a long screwdriver to turn the shaft.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????

I just dont like telling people to stick a screw driver down into the engine. If this process works for you and you always used a screw driver to align the oil pump. Great stuff
But its Bad enough the dizzy gear gets installed wrong Plus bumping the starter to destroy the dizzy gear and maybe the cam gear. Cant imagine what could happen if something got dropped into the intake. Geee now what ?

It's pretty hard to lose a 16" screwdriver down the distributor hole.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????

I have thought of taking an old distributor and grinding the teeth off the gear. You could just drop it in and turn the rotor where you want it. You could also use it to prime the oil pump.
I just don't pull the distributor enough to make it worth my wild so I use a screwdriver.
