Re: KS10 rear end
Can someone identify this trans? It’s a 3 speed OD trans, just not sure which model.

Re: KS10 rear end
Looks like a 4 bolt side cover Chevy 3 speed overdrive. If you are planning on putting that in your truck, you'll need to either use a floor shifter or swap columns to a column shifter. Easiest would probably be to leave it as a floor shifter since you already have the factory 4 speed

Re: KS10 rear end
I got a quote rom MDL to install a 5-speed. $3982.00.
I don't think I will be taking my truck to Idaho, however, they do provide some good information. What do you guys think?

Here are a couple threads for how to swap out to a 14-bolt:

2. Is it easy to adapt? 3. Would I have to cut up my transmission cover? It doesn't seem to be the same a top-loaded trans. 2. How is the tailshaft connected? Some special yoke?

It uses a slip yoke on the transmission end of the driveshaft. The picture you posted shows the part of the slip yoke that attaches to the u joints. If you're looking for something that has the shifter more on top and in the middle, an s10 5 speed would be a good option behind the 292

Re: KS10 rear end
Sure is. The earlier S10 5 speeds also had a cable driven speedometer. You'll most likely still have to modify your trans hump somewhat, but the shifter will still be in line with the current one. Member Lugnutz65 has some great stuff on swapping those transmissions in

Will a Tremec T45 work for my setup?
It’s overdrive 5-speed, right?

Re: KS10 rear end
You could make it work, but you would need to remove the bellhousing mount crossmember from your truck, then purchase or fabricate a mount for the rear of that transmission. You will also need something to convert the electric speedo sensor to manual if you want to keep the stock gauges. The s10 transmissions that you can bolt to your factory bellhousing is from the mid to late 80s

Re: KS10 rear end
Well, going to hold off on the trans for a couple weeks. Just pulled the 4-speed out; hopefully picking up an engine hoist tomorrow morning and then pulling the motor.

Re: KS10 rear end
Anyone know where to get a drain plug for the rear end? It is 1” diameter, fine thread.

Re: KS10 rear end
Here are my thoughts on your situation. I would try to locate a later rearend from a '70-'72 Chevy 3/4 ton truck. Most have a coil spring suspension like your truck. More than likely, the rearend will have 4.11 gears. I had one years ago with 3.54 gears.
Using this rearend, will be a direct bolt-in with the exception of the panhard bar. As stated earlier, the later rearends had a boss cast into the upper right corner of the center section for the panhard bar. In your case I would buy an aftermarket panhard that has it's right side mount on the right side trailing arm perch. Another consideration, the drive shaft might not be the correct length. I don't think you would like 4.11 gears using your stock transmission. Too many RPMs at highway speeds. An overdrive trans is the cure but pricey. No way would I use a T5 transmission in a 3/4 ton, they are pretty weak and can't stand a lot of torque. An NV 4500 out of later trucks would be a good choice for a manual but they are pricey and very much in demand. It depends on what you plan to use your truck for. Just cruising is one thing, but if you plan to use it as a truck, put it together with the heavier components. |

Re: KS10 rear end
Yes that will work if you don't plan on hauling heavy loads. That is a semi-floating 9.5" 14 bolt. You will need to weld on the trailing arm mounts and a panhard bar mount. I make both of those. With that said, I agree that to achieve what you are wanting an OD trans is needed. In my experience the Eaton HO52 is often times a noisy differential.

Re: KS10 rear end
Here is the for sale thread for the trailing arm mounts.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=620836 I do not have one for the panhard bar mount is it is quite new. I have only sold 2 so far. The cost is $39.50. It is basically a copy of the factory bracket.

Re: KS10 rear end
Saw a Dana 60, 14 bolt, 8 lug I could possibly use in my truck. Only thing, it does not have the drums. Are the drums easy to find?
